Description
Professionally, Dr. Alec Johnson has almost reached his goals. As this year's recipient of a humanitarian award with his ex, Dr. Tyler Hall, Alec's work with the homeless is about to be recognized. Unfortunately, his personal life sucks because now he has to attend several events alongside Tyler - with his ex's new boyfriend in tow. In an attempt to lift his mood and break out of his rut, Alec purchases a motorcycle he has no idea how to start. Dylan Booth doesn't have time for Dr. Clueless and his fickle 1964 Harley, but the cocky mechanic can't say no to the request for help.
Having spent his teen years on the streets, and losing his best friend to HIV, Dylan decides teaching the do-gooder how to ride is the least he can do. But watching Alec flounder in his ex's company throws Dylan into protector mode, and the confirmed hetero introduces himself as Alec's new boyfriend. But Dylan's a master bullshitter, and the phony PDA soon turns ultra-hot. Alec can't afford to get attached, and Dylan's learned everyone eventually leaves. Unfortunately, playing the backup boyfriend is starting to feel way too real...

Exceptional story...
When I first began this story, I just assumed it would be another "I'm not gay, but I like a dude" story. Boy howdy, not even remotely close. Alec and Dylan's journey is chock-full of humor, angst, confusion, hot sex, and delight...I just could not get enough. The narrator did an excellent job bringing these characters to life, which only enhanced the story. River Jaymes offered a different twist, virtually inventing another way of meeting someone. The first scene with Dylan and Alec in bed...phenomenal! I want to rush out and buy a Harley and a leather jacket...definitely recommend!

WHAT'S IN A LABEL?
I truly enjoyed this book. It wasn't filled with a lot of angst and inner dialogue which I appreciate in a book. The story flowed smoothly and at a nice pace which kept me interested. I immediately liked Alec and Dylan.
Alec and Tyler are doctors and partners. They opened a clinic to educate and provide HIV medical care to the homeless. Tyler calls-it-off with Alec after 2 years with no explanation and has another boyfriend with 2 months.
On a whim Alec buys a classic Harley on line but doesn't know anything about motorcycles. Alec has some mechanical issues with the Harley so his friend, Noah who is flamboyant, sends him to Dylan's shop. It's obvious Alec doesn't know about motorcycles and when Dylan questions him on why he bought the bike Alec says it was an impulse buy and starts rambling about his and Tyler's breakup. Dylan says to Alec 'candy, gum and porno magazines are impulse buys not motorcycles.'
Alec convinces Dylan to give him motorcycle lessons and their story begins....
This is a book I'll listen to over and over. In case your wondering, there are several hot sex scenes.
Marc Bachmann gave a great performance. His character's voices were distinct, which is a true talent, so I never had to guess who was speaking.
I absolutely recommend this book to anyone no matter what you consider your label to be.

Robotic Voice
What did you like best about The Backup Boyfriend? What did you like least?
I love this story. Alec and Dylan are sweet and sexy all at the same time. And while I read this book a while ago, I got the audio to listen to in the car. I love listening to my favorites over and over again, but this narrator sounds like a machine or a computer is reading the lines. The words are choppy and there's no feeling. At times it sounds like the narrator is trying to give Alec a Brisith accent. I suggest you read the book first, you'll enjoy the story so much more.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
His voice if robotic and little to no feeling.

Awesome Story, Horrible Performance
Would you consider the audio edition of The Backup Boyfriend to be better than the print version?
The print version is so much better. He sounds like he is reading a dramatic story instead of a romance. I'm listening because I bought the audio, but I will prefer to just read the story.

Great!
The Backup Boyfriend is one of my favorite M/M books. I've read the book twice. I love the story and the characters. I was so excited to see it available on Audible. I've never listened to a book narrated by Mark Bachmann, so I was pleasantly surprised by the job he did. Good narration, fantastic story, I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys gay romances.

Nicely put together relationship listen
Make no mistake this is a relationship building book. It's a good listen and covers a number of areas. It had a good pace that was a little slow for me but characters you will like and care about. At times it seems like it may get too heavy but the author brings it together well. Liked the narrator too.

Great story
The writer pulls you into the story and has you actually caring about the characters.
The pace of the story builds you up to what's going to happen next.

Great story. So so narration
I actually read this book myself a year or so ago and enjoyed it so much, i wanted the audio version as well. The story is fun and the sexy times are hot. The narrator though was a little over the top at times. I almost quit listening, but I was in the middle of a cleaning project and just never got around to it. It did finally grow on me enough to finish listening to the entire book. I think that may have more to do with the great story rather than the narration.

Pure joy
Complex, interesting, characters, an unlikely couple, but a perfect one in the end. Narration was great. Wish there was more to read about Alec and Dylan, but the second book is on Tyler and Memphis. I will go back and start listening from the beginning again. So good.

Could've benefitted from a different narrator
This wasn't half bad, actually! I did enjoy the story, but I'm also a big fan of fake relationships, so that ought to be kept in mind.
I was expecting half of the story to be about Dylan freaking out about his sexuality, but I was pleasantly surprised when that was his smallest concern. I would've liked to learn more about his background - or Alec's, for that matter - but they had more than enough going on with their relationship problems to be focussing on the past more than they did.
The characters are still interesting and three dimensional enough to keep the story entertaining. The sex scenes are way hot (especially since no ridiculous euphemisms were used in the writing of this story!), so that was a plus!
I'm not particularly interested in listening to the sequel, though, which has a lot to do with the narrator, unfortunatley.
Marc Bachmann's voice is nice enough but the way they kept over-emphasising every other word was highly distracting, and eventually annoying. I'll have a go at the sample before making a final decision, but by now I'm biased against him, unfortunately. Maybe when some more time has passed :)
Overall it's a solid story with good sex scenes. Anyone who enjoys fake dating stories, and some nice pining and denial will definitely enjoy this.
