Description
What elevates Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth, what gives the poems their disturbing brilliance, is Warsan Shire's ability to give simple, beautiful eloquence to the veiled world where sensuality lives in the dominant narrative of Islam, reclaiming the more nuanced truths of earlier times - as in Tayeb Salih's work - and translating to the realm of lyric the work of the likes of Nawal El Saadawi. As Rumi said, "Love will find its way through all languages on its own"; in Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth, Warsan's début, we witness the unearthing of a poet who finds her way through all preconceptions to strike the heart directly.

Enjoyable and dramatic
I so enjoyed listening to this book. The author's reading lent to much to my understanding. Her writing style is both eloquent and arresting and I love her phrasing to articulate her thoughts. Masterful.

Painfully beautiful
I keep listening to this. Each time I hear something new. The story is painfully beautiful, yet neccessary. The author is truly talented and her voice brings the story to life. Strong work. Well done!

Great for reflection
A brilliant collection of poems exposing the everyday plus generational strengths and challenges of women. They made me more conscious of these through humour and reflection. I enjoyed the author’s reading on Audible. My favourites: Questions for Miriam: “You were a city exiled from skin, your mouth a burning church” “Conversations About Home,” got me, got my heart, it is deep. It got me thinking about the meaning of stability. “Ugly” is just phenomenal, it made me laugh out loud.
