Description
Plucked out of the Collector’s Pens, auctioned off to a vampire contingent, and sent across the ocean to the Alpha Territories was not exactly how I planned to spend my week.
Actually, scratch that. I had planned the first bit. But I was supposed to be sold to the werewolves so I could save my friend from a fate worse than death. Instead, the bloodsuckers have me and so far? It's not going great. I've been shoved into a corset and made to look like an extra on the cast of Bridgerton, all to take part in the Harvest Games—think The Bachelor set in the 1800s, but the men are all vampires, and then add a decidedly terrifying Squid Games element to the mix.
No problem.
My goal—besides keeping the number of holes in my body to the current norm—is more than surviving. It is escaping the inescapable, finding my way to the werewolf territory, and getting Jordan back.
Cue the political strife.
Armed with nothing more than a super sharp hairpin, my questionable charm, and an irrational amount of optimism, plans to get both me and my bestie out alive are in full swing.
Until the General of the Vampire Army and his molten eyes light me on fire and leave me wondering if escape is what I want after all.
Maybe one extra set of holes wouldn’t be the worst thing ever....

Just nope!
I normally like Shannon Mayer's imagination, but this thing is a HUGE miss for me. I call it a thing because what it is, is not really very good at being a story...
I assume there is a story in here somewhere....in-between all the "my c**k throbbed at the site of her..." and "my desire to f**k her... "which gave this collection of words a very vulgar feel...These two phrases plus multiple variations of these two phrases were basically 90% of this collection of words. The actual story related content could have been summed up in probably 30 minutes. Very disappointing!
The only redeeming part of this thi g was that the narration wasn't entirely awful.

Smut
I am disappointed. I am a Mayer fan but this is awful. Nightmare inducing opening with suggestions of porn to come. It read like a story in an old fashioned “men’s” magazine. I didn’t make it past three chapters before returning it. Just gross. Shannon you’re better than this.

Fabulous start to a new series!
Fifteen years after humans find out monsters are real and we aren't the top of the food chain... Could there be a more interesting premise for a new urban fantasy series? Shannon Mayer creates amazing relatable characters with intricate relationships spanning the spectrum of emotion. At times it can be a roller coaster of feels. She has done some very thoughtful world building and laying the groundwork for future additions to The Alpha Territories. I'm really looking forward to the continuing adventures of Sienna and her friends and enemies.

Hot!! 🔥🔥🔥
Heart pounding read!
Goddess, this book literally sunk its teeth and never let me go till the very end.
I was lost in this world of vampires and selection vibes. I don’t want to give out any spoilers but this book is addicting!
The narrators Summer Roberts and Tyler Donne are amazing!! I loved how they each portrayed Sienna and Dominic! They truly brought the characters to life!!
The book is both spicy and fast pace. Be sure to have your pearls ready for clutching because you’ll need it!
I absolutely love Dominic, Sienna, and Will.
Dominic and Sienna are both complex characters.
This one will stick with you long after you finish. Such a good book hangover!!
I don’t think there’s another book out there similar to this one and I love how unique it was.

Amazing
Shannon is such a sneaky little minx for keeping this book under wraps for so long. It was absolutely amazing! Imagine a mixture of Trueblood, Bridgerton and a dash of The Hunger Games with some added spice and you have this twistedly delicious book.
Like most, if not all, of Shannon’s books I loved this one from the first page. From The Stockyards to Blackthorne Castle the world building was beautifully done. I felt like I was there with the characters. Watching things happen real time.
Sienna is easily one of my favorite FMCs that Shannon has written. She’s different and so damn bullheaded that you can’t help but love her. The General, Dominic, is such a grumpy horn dog and I love it. I want my own Dom.
The mystery behind the things happening in this book keep you on your toes. While we get a couple answers we are left with so many more questions. How are we to wait for the next book?

Vampire Slow Burn

Slow Burn 🔥
Anyone who knows me can attest to how much I love a good vampire book. This was more than GOOD.
Based in a modern setting where the supernatural creatures of the world have come out of hiding after centuries, humans have to offer up members of their own society in a "harvest" in order to keep the peace between species. This particular story follows a group of women who have been sold off to the vampires to participate in a series of testing to prove their worth and a chance at becoming a member of vampire high society.
The delicious tension and slow burn build up made my head want to explode, in the best possible way. This book ends on a cliffhanger so, be warned! I am eagerly awaiting the release of book two in February.

Smart, well done, spicy that leaves you wanting more
The FL is not an idiot, and the ML is more than walking abs. The plot is engaging and fun, somewhere between Bridgerton and Hunger Games with a side of a coup.
The spicy scenes are a bit of a blue ball, no payoff in book one… so unfortunately I’ll be buying book 2 tomorrow instead of waiting for my credits to drop. 🥵

An Entrancing Beginning to a New Series!
There are so many things that I love about Shannon Mayer's books, but her mastery at world building and the depth of character development are at the top of the list. As the first book in a new series, Taken by Fate details a world where the veil between humanity and the paranormal has fallen.
Sienna's best friend has been sold to the shifter lands. She allows herself to be captured by the "collectors" with a plan to rescue Jordan from the shifters and get them both out of the Alpha Territories. Her plan goes terribly wrong when her group is auctioned to the vampire contingent instead of the shifters, and Sienna is purchased by Dominic, the General of the Vampire Army, to be part of the Harvest Games.
The Harvest Games pits the human girls against each other in a Darwinian, yet Bridgertonesque, approach to determining their future roles in the vampire lands. Sienna experiences an unexplainable connection to Dominic, constant danger, and unexpected friendships. Not all the girls will survive, and making it through the games to rescue Jordan is her primary goal.
Sienna's humor, candor, curiosity, and loyalty make her a f-mc that I totally enjoyed. Dominic, the illegitimate son of the king, is a strong, protective, sacrificial hero who puts the welfare of others above his own. A slow burn, enemies to lovers trope containing a few hot scenes, it also has plenty of the m-mc's carnal thoughts make this a steamy read/listen.
The performance by narrators Summer Roberts and Tyler Donne is exceptional and truly brought this story to life! This is an example of an audiobook enhancing the story itself. I'm sure when I read the ebook, Summer and Tyler's voices will be in my head!
This book, entrancing in itself, sets the stage for what promises to be a romantasy series full of political intrigue, danger, and mystery. I can't wait to read or listen to the next book

Crazy New Cutthroat World by Mayer
Crazy & wild new world where True Blood meets The Hunger Games and the Bachelorette in a way. Sienna is fierce as always, with a hint of naïve about many things since the Veil started falling. The series is a bit darker and supposed to be spicier than her other works lately. Unfortunately it amounts to a bunch of angst & a whole lot of sexual tension between Sienna & Dominic. FOR THE LOVE!!!! PLEASEEEEE give us some full on sex scenes in book 2 because I can’t take much more tension in any of Mayer’s’ ongoing series’ right now.
Discovering the characters and power players in a new Mayer series is always an adventure in of itself, and the intricacies of this one had my head spinning for a bit. There’s an enormous amount of mystery around Sienna’s plight, outcome, and her seemingly more than she appears human characteristics.
If you prefer plot over romance, always choose a Mayer novel; I just hope this series can finally give us more of her elusive romances. The story was great; I just might be slightly bitter over the plot twist at the end.

Meh
The narration was perky, upbeat, English accented. Not in keeping with the story. Found it distracting. Couldn't finish the audio book.
