The mercenaries of the Stone & Shield have fulfilled their contract for the Emrosian Empire. Now, it's time to get paid. But a long march and an unforgiving past stand between them and the capital of Emros City.
After years of fighting, the wasting sickness that has plagued Emperor Dremnes has finally claimed his life. What will come of the Empire under the control of his untried son Ras Dremnes II?
In the far west, the Councilors of Guilion seek answers to their own problems and those that would affect the future of the world. Their source of power nears its end, their ties to the Empire are failing. Now, they must decide which part of their world matters most.
The world ever changes, but life goes on. All there is to do is survive.
