    Description

An unforgettable novel about the power of friendship and kindness by the New York Times bestselling author of Pay It Forward.

In the summer of 1969, 14-year-old Lucas Painter carries a huge weight on his shoulders. His brother is fighting in Vietnam. His embattled parents are locked in a never-ending war. And his best friend, Connor, is struggling with his own family issues. To find relief from the chaos, Lucas takes long, meandering walks, and one day he veers into the woods.

There he discovers an isolated cabin and two huge dogs. Frightened, he runs. And the dogs run with him. Lucas finds unusual peace in running with the dogs, and eventually he meets their owner, Zoe Dinsmore. Closed off and haunted by a tragic past, Zoe has given up. She doesn’t want to be saved. She wants out. But Lucas doesn’t want her to go, and he sees an opportunity to bring more than one friend back into the light. It’s either the best or worst idea he’s ever had, but Lucas isn’t giving up on Zoe or Connor.

Their unexpected connection might be the saving grace that Zoe thought she’d lost, that Connor needs, and that Lucas has been running toward.

"Delivering this coming-of-age audiobook about friendship, healing, and love, narrator Nick Podehl brings many fascinating characters to life." (AudioFile)

“Charting Lucas’ journey from a sheltered teenager to a worldly young adult, Hyde (Have You Seen Luis Velez?, 2019) brings signature compassion to her characters and highlights the relationships that allow us to feel a deeper sense of connection to the world around us. Fans of Hyde’s previous novels and those who enjoyed Meg Donohue’s You, Me, and the Sea (2019) will adore this ode to unlikely friends.” (Booklist)

    Excellent read/listen!

At 71, there was a lot of nostalgia here for me. Also, alot to think about parenting. In some ways I think the parents of the Boomer generation provided food and shelter but never really bonded. I had a friend/mentor who helped me get through those teen years much as Zoe is described. As always Catherine Ryan Hyde digs deep into the soul of her characters and tugs at us too.

    And Again!!!!!

I've read everyone of Catherine's books and after each time I'm left thinking "she could never top that story." As if it's her personal mission she keeps proving me wrong. Stay awakened all of my senses. In each book there is a careful approach taken to show respect for the subject matter. That's truly a gift b/c it's so easy to unknowingly offend people. I'm a retired veteran and have had the honor of chatting with Vietnam vets and I know that they would appreciate this book. Each character felt familiar to me. It's a story of finding friendship under strange circumstances. It's about life and love. Not pretty life but real sometimes tarnished life. Thank you Catherine for sharing your gift.

    Great Writing and Narration

Finally! Good literature, good writing, good narrating! I seem so often to find myself returning or discarding audiobooks that I find shallow, repetitive and weak.
This is my second book by this author, who is truly gifted, in my opinion.

    A delightful story!

    Stay

Catherine Ryan Hyde has written a delightful book with a perfect blend of characters, setting and story.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    SUMMARY
Lucas Painter is fourteen years old and overwhelmed with responsibility. It’s 1969 and his brother, Roy is fighting in Vietnam, his parents are endlessly fighting, and his best friend Connor is struggling with depression. Lucas is trying desperately to help all of them. Lucas has turned to running to take his mind off his troubles. On a run in the woods near his house, he finds an isolated cabin, two large dogs and Zoe Dinsmore. Zoe, a prickly and reclusive fifty-five year old woman with a tragic past, may be just the friend that Lucas, Connor and Roy need.

“When somebody holds a view that seems to make no sense, know that it makes sense to them, but for reasons you don’t know anything about yet.”

    REVIEW
STAY is an endearing and engrossing coming of age story. Lucas is trying hard to understand the world around him. He wants everyone to stay put, but first he must learn that he is not in control of everyone else’s life. You will fall in love with Lucas, who is trying so hard to keep everyone happy. My favorite thing about the book was the beautifully descriptive writing.

The story is impressively direct and tackles some serious issues such as drug addiction, attempted suicide, and mental illness. But the book is really about friendship, kindness forgiveness and redemption.

STAY is my first CATHERINE RYAN HYDE book and I was delighted with the writing, the characters and most of all, the story. My favorite character was Zoe Dinsmore, when you peeled away her prickly layers she was wise, astute and compassionate. This was definitely a book I did not want to end. I loved this book so much I have just started listening to Have a You Seen Luis Velez? Which was published May 21, 2019. Watch for that review coming soon too!

“People need help with perspective sometimes. If they’re all alone in their own head, they can lose perspective. Sometimes you need to use somebody else like a mirror. Let them reflect back to you the way the world really is.”

    Good story but terrible narration

I love her books but they are better read than listened to. The narration has been awful on every one I’ve listened to.
Lovely story of broken people, big mistakes that can’t be forgotten, unlikely friendships and redemption. Love conquers all. I love the George Bailey-its a wonderful life concept of how different things would have been for a lot of people if Lucas had never gone into the woods and run with the dogs

    Another CRH Win

CRH once again gives us a real down to earth story that you can live and believe. We are taken on a journey of real small town America and on a journey of love, grief and redemption. This story reminds us that we are all in this together. I look forward to her next novel.

    A Reader's Comments

The topic if suicide is very important to talk about, specifically the reasons not to do it. This novel does an amazing job at helping readers to see why suicide is not the answer.

STAY...one of my FEW "Loved It" books

Many life's lessons creatively wound around a mystifying mystery. I added many bookmarks so I wouldn't date miss a thing. The characters are well developed and I learned to love them all! I
Narrator Nick Podehl does an especially authentic job of Luka's demeanor and thought processes. Loved it !!!

Wow! What another heart-warming book by Catherine Ryan Hyde! Always a pleasure how she manages to let her characters bring out the goodness in mankind! Another very special and precious read which has a very positive and uplifting message!
Hoping for much more of Catherine Ryan Hyde I say thank you Audible! Keep up the good work and keep considering that not everybody wants to read or hear about intrigues and bloody murders!
