Description

Barely recovered from her brush with necromancy, Ivy is flung once more into a world of intrigue, adventure, and potential death and disaster. It's not her fault - it just so turns out that she's now the only person in the entire world who can communicate with the dead. And they're a chatty bunch with a list of demands.

When the ghosts offer information about a witch-hating mass murderer in return for Ivy's help, she has no choice but to get involved. She might be getting herself into more trouble than she realizes, though - and that's even before she's dragged to Sunday dinner so she can meet Winter's family....

Nothing short of fantastic

Helen Harper and Tanya Eby did it again! I'm sad to see the series end but think it closes well and I know I can always re-read/listen. I look forward to more adventures from Helen Harper and Tanya Eby.

Not quite as good as the rest of the series

Although I enjoyed this book, It is not as good as the previous two. Worth a listen, but just slightly disappointed.

I really enjoyed this ridiculous trilogy.

I enjoyed this book and the two preceding it. Some of it was so ridiculous I found myself laughing helplessly. It has certainly been entertaining listening and has put me in a good mood. I would occasionally snort and giggle as I thought about some of the dialogue in these books. They are a real fun read.

Fun and entertaining

Great series, witty, fun and creative. My only complaint about this series is the lack of romantic scenes between Ivy and Winter. Their supposed to be passionately in love. However, it's a pure PG rating for their inmate situations... Kinda lackluster. Now don't get me wrong I'm not looking for fifty shades of Grey but a little more in the romantics department would have been appreciated to give the relationship authenticity. Lastly, while Ivy had her endearing qualities. Harper, pushed the Lazy angle a little too much. Despite those few drawbacks, the book was still a great read!

Little Bogged Down

I think Harper's books are enjoyable, but I get frustrated by them, too. I finally figured out why: the action scenes.

During times of high tension, the action is interrupted by a lot of internal dialogue. This results in a jarring break that pulls me out of the story. For example, in between a bad guy grabbing Ivy and putting a knife to her neck, she has like ten different snarky thoughts.

While these thoughts are entertaining, they would be better served in another place. During times of high adrenaline, people's minds go blank. If that effect is not carried over to the narrative, the danger rings false and the effect and emotion of a situation is greatly reduced. It's that much harder to believe Ivy is really scared or worried because she still has the presence of mind to crack jokes or reflect, so it's less rewarding when she gets out of it. It would work much better if those thoughts came to her after the situation resolved.

Tanya Eby tries to compensate for these extra thoughts by rushing at breakneck speed through the lines, but the effect is still there. (She was wonderful, by the way.)

I also would have liked to see a little more character development from Rafe. He didn't have a lot of dialogue aside from building up Ivy's ego or murmuring affectionate platitudes. That's not to say I wanted him to argue with Ivy or anything--but a lot of his quirks were established in the first book and reused. There wasn't a lot to discover about him this time around, unfortunately. It can be hard to think this stuff up, I know, but it would be worth the effort because it helps the audience feel that much closer to the characters.

All in all, though, it was a good ending to Ivy and Rafe's stories. Definitely still worth listening to for entertainment value and closure.

Three Home Runs for this series!

If you haven't figured it out simply by the epilogue or just from knowing that there is a third book... well spoiler alert: Ivy lived in Book 2! 🤣DUH!!!

Book 3 finds Ivy trying to live with the consequences of her actions. She has not only altered her life, but Winter's life as well.

The Ivy of this book gives me Charley Davidson vibes (By Darinda Jones). Especially the scene when she tells a ghost about tripping over dirty clothes on the floor and breaking her tibia. 🤣

I like that Ivy is brave, but what is it with the constant sneaking off to do things alone? It's like she is secretly trying to get herself hurt. Why would an author make a female lead so smart and powerful, but still have her making elementary mistakes?

The "mystery/case" of for this story was better than the that of book 2, but the conclusion just didnt match the build up. Witches are being killed and the ghost are trying to help Ivy solve the case. Yet, when they have the opportunity to stop things ots just BLAH. Things were getting tense but the fire works just didnt come for me.

Lastly, there is the love story with Ivy and Winter. Their romance is moving even faster than before. Light speed fast!!! We went from 0 to 100 in only two chapters of reading. When you get to book 3 there is no slowing down. When romances happen too quickly it doesnt get embedded in your heart the same way. I like them being together but it just doesnt give me the feeling in the pit of my belly when a couple is FINALLY together. I mean they've only been officially dating for two weeks and they are making plans to meet Winter'parents... that's a little too quick. By the way, why dont we hear anything from Ivy's parents???

By the way, the two things I wrote about in my Book 2 review actually happened in Book 3. You get a chapter from Bruyus' point of view and we find out wht Brutus hasn't let Ivy know how well he can speak 😊. And nope, I had not read nor heard any details on this book at all.

Narration continues to be good in my opinion.

Because this series was so good. I'm gonna try out the others by this author. Any suggestions for which to start next???

3 Stars 🌟🌟🌟- Good Book. I like the overall concept and it was delivered well. Most common ranking for a book I enjoyed and look forward to the next.

Great story

I really like that theirs a story and how Ivy and Winter have different personalities. And the story isn’t just focused on their relationship. Real good story that will keep you guessing what’s going to happen next.

Time for a hunt!

Ivy and Rafe are back at in, in an all new adventure. There is a witch killer on the loose and no matter how she tries not to be, Ivy is pulled into the hunt. That’s thanks to her new “gift”. Seems taking in the power of a necromancer leaves you with a little tie to spirits.

Both Ivy and Rafe put all of themselves into the hunt and when they find the man responsible, things go from bad to worse. It’s a race to find him again, stop him before he kills again, all while dodging ghosts and other order people who are determined to get in the way.

I will at the ending wasn’t what I was expecting. It left a little to be desired. It needed more - as it is it felt rushed to me, even if it had a comedic flare to it.
