Description

Will dark magic claim their home?

Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders, but her father’s too kindhearted to collect his debts. They face poverty until Miryem hardens her own heart and takes up his work in their village. Her success creates rumours she can turn silver into gold, which attract the fairy king of winter himself. He sets her an impossible challenge - and if she fails, she’ll die. Yet if she triumphs, it may mean a fate worse than death. And in her desperate efforts to succeed, Miryem unwittingly spins a web which draws in the unhappy daughter of a lord.

Irina’s father schemes to wed her to the tsar - he will pay any price to achieve this goal. However, the dashing tsar is not what he seems. And the secret he hides threatens to consume the lands of mortals and winter alike. Torn between deadly choices, Miryem and Irina embark on a quest that will take them to the limits of sacrifice, power and love.

Excellent Russian Fairytale

This is as usual a great fairytale from Novik but the narrative changes POV often without saying the name of the person speaking or really indicating that anything has changed making it difficult to follow at times. I enjoyed it, but this might be easier to follow in print than audio.

Novik Spins Silver to Gold - Phenomenal!

This is a story of a girl who spins silver to gold but really it is a masterpiece of ‘silver’ folk tales Novik skilfully spins together into a ‘golden’ story. It is masterfully done and the narrator has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. She manages male and female voices alike without sounding fake. I was a bit confused a couple of times when the main female character changed quickly but soon got used to who was who. Highly recommend!

Make This for tv!

At first I thought it a bit ‘wordy’ but it is a true fairytale. Following the logic of the fairytale and giving us 3 strong female leads ready to change the world and give up everything they know. At the end I shouted out loud that this must be put on some screen in some way. I woke up my boyfriend who got a long lecture on the value of non euro/usa-centered literature with strong female leads and a story where the story twists aren’t out of the blue but in par with the story’s own rules. I love it and will force everyone I know to listen or read it!

Fell short

I found it hard to stay engaged with the story. The characters, plot and style were all a bit flat. It was good to pass the time, but nothing to write home about.

A 6 star book!

Wow what a find! Katie Sobey once again provides an utterly outstanding narration. Naomi Novik has spun another throughly enjoyable tale, with a completely satisfying ending! Don't hesitate. Like her book Uprooted, Spinning Silver is brilliant!

Amazing northern European feel, with a wonderful Jewish main character. This story was just beautiful and told in the most charming way. The way it ended way perfect <3 Must read!

A fantastic tale read well

It took me only a chapter to be drawn into the world and story Naomi Novik has built. At first I wasn't too attached to some of the characters, but by the end... without giving away too much, it's safe to say that you should give all of them a chance! Katy Sobey does an incredible job at making all their voices and personalities come to life, so I can only recommend this audio book!

My only complaint is that it ended

The story is concise and engaging, the language simple and beautiful, and the performance felt very honest. I so wish there was another book, that this was part of a series, but I’ll have to content myself with what I am given and cherish it.

Sweet fairy tale

I was a bit worried in beginning of the book as the story setup is some objectivist fever dream, but the story quickly moves on with romance and fairies. If the story has any hidden morals, it is that marriages are the root of all evil.
