It was a strong face, certainly - the eyes pale grey and very cold, the mouth was hard, the dark hair - greystreaked now - still fell in the authentic comma over the forehead. 'This is how John Pearson reacted to his first encounter with the real James Bond, an encounter probably unique in the annals of thriller writing.

A Week in December is Sebastian Faulks's first wholly contemporary novel. Set in London, it's a brilliant social satire, structured like a thriller, that takes place over the course of a single week at the end of 2007. It brings together an intriguing cast of characters, each apparently in his or her own world but - as gradually becomes clear - ultimately intricately related.

America, 1960. In Washington, DC, John F. Kennedy has just been elected president. In Havana, Fidel Castro has been in office for a year, and with Cold War tensions rapidly heating up and the Soviets leading the space race, the thought of a Communist leader so close to home is already raising American blood pressure. Anti-Communist fever is rampant in the USA, with a paranoid establishment seeing reds under every bed. Nevertheless, the decision to snuff out the threat of Castro by hiring Tom Jefferson, America's best assassin, to kill him comes from an unusual quarter: the Mafia.

Histoire
Nat, a 47-year-old veteran of Britain's Secret Intelligence Service, believes his years as an agent runner are over. He is back in London with his wife, the long-suffering Prue. But with the growing threat from Moscow Centre, the office has one more job for him. Nat is to take over The Haven, a defunct substation of London General with a rag-tag band of spies. The only bright light on the team is young Florence, who has her eye on Russia Department and a Ukrainian oligarch with a finger in the Russia pie.
Description
It's 1969, and, having just celebrated his 45th birthday, James Bond - British special agent 007 - is summoned to headquarters to receive an unusual assignment. Zanzarim, a troubled West African nation, is being ravaged by a bitter civil war, and M directs Bond to quash the rebels threatening the established regime.
Bond's arrival in Africa marks the start of a feverish mission to discover the forces behind this brutal war - and he soon realizes the situation is far from straightforward. Piece by piece, Bond uncovers the real cause of the violence in Zanzarim, revealing a twisting conspiracy that extends further than he ever imagined.
Moving from rebel battlefields in West Africa to the closed doors of intelligence offices in London and Washington, this novel is at once a gripping thriller, a tensely plotted story full of memorable characters and breathtaking twists, and a masterful study of power and how it is wielded - a brilliant addition to the James Bond canon.

- Humble reviewer

The best of the period continuation novels.
Every Bond fan has their opinions about the continuation novels and I will not delve much into those discussions. As of this review, since 2008, three authors have written new Bond novels largely set within the original Fleming period of the 1950s and 60s; this one being set in 1969 (five years after Fleming's death and roughly a year after the events of "Colonel Sun," the first continuation book.). William Boyd wisely uses his own experiences and crafts them into a worthy Bond novel with a plot that differs a bit from Fleming's ideas. I especially enjoyed the action in Africa and London and found the book to be suitably detailed and entertaining. While no one will match Mr. Fleming, I appreciate that Mr. Boyd keeps Bond in his own wheel house and does not particularly attempt to "update" the character for the "modern" reader. If anything, Bond's consumption of spirits caused many reviewers to wonder if Bond had a sober moment during the course of the story. People, let that stuff go. This is escapism and let's enjoy the ride. Bond gets to do the things we only wish we could get away with... Thank you Mr. Boyd for a laudable addition to the canon.

Great story, with everything you expect from a James Bond story: seduction, intrigue, debonair style, judicious application of violence. Very enjoyable!

Intricate plot and story, well performed Audible
Dominic West does a brilliant job performing the Audible version of Solo, by novelist William Boyd. West succeeds is capturing dialects of a white Rhodesian mercenary, the smooth then edgy tone of James Bond and his boss, M. He also modulates his voice to a young energetic British woman, an American thirtyish actress, the various dialects of black west African men: mercenaries, taxi drivers, clerks, witch doctor, and the dialect of a German-Dutch-Anglo millionaire. So West is asks to lend voice to many characters, to bring them to life. He does this with great alacrity and adds a depth of texture to one’s experience to this interesting and entertaining novel with good dialogue that West displays his talent.

Poor research
Decent story but poorly researched, especially regarding firearms. A pistol has a magazine for feeding cartridges into the barrel. It does not use clips. Misnomer. Also, it is much more difficult to acquire a firearm in the United States as opposed to “how easy” the wither made it seem to be. This is very dishonest, and shoddy writing.

Solid Bond novel that leaves room for a sequel
You'll get your money or credits worth with Solo. A standard issue Bond adventure that lives up to the name of the franchise. The narrator is excellent and shows his versatility with accents and different voices. He also sounds as if he's Bond which adds to the immersion. The end leaves some things open for a sequel.
