Histoire
All her life, Spensa has dreamed of becoming a pilot. Of proving she's a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned about her father were crushing. The rumours of his cowardice are true - he deserted his flight during battle against the Krell. Worse, though, he turned against his team and attacked them. Spensa is sure there's more to the story. And she's sure that whatever happened to her father in his starship could happen to her. When she made it outside the protective shell of her planet, she heard the stars - and it was terrifying.

When a planet-destroying Delver suddenly appears in the sky of Detritus and vanishes just as suddenly, FM knows that the last free human society got lucky. “Don’t trust their lies. Don’t trust their false peace.” That is the warning that Alanik of the planet ReDawn gave the human pilot Spensa after Alanik’s ship crash-landed on Detritus. While accepting an invitation to meet with her people’s enemy, the Galactic Superiority, Alanik heard Spensa’s cry for help across the vastness of space, and she used her cytonic powers to hyperjump her ship to the source of that cry. What she found there was a shock - a whole planet of free humans fighting against the Superiority. Were they the allies her people desperately needed?

Spensa's life as a Defiant Defense Force pilot has been far from ordinary. She proved herself one of the best starfighters in the human enclave of Detritus and she saved her people from extermination at the hands of the Krell - the enigmatic alien species that has been holding them captive for decades. What's more, she travelled light-years from home as a spy to infiltrate the Superiority, where she learned of the galaxy beyond her small, desolate planet home. Now, the Superiority - the governing galactic alliance bent on dominating all human life - has started a galaxy-wide war.

Histoire
An all-new Stormlight Archive novella, Edgedancer, is the crown jewel of Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection, the first audiobook of short fiction by number New York Times best-selling author Brandon Sanderson.
Description
Defeated, crushed, and driven almost to extinction, the remnants of the human race is trapped on a planet that is constantly attacked by mysterious alien starfighters.
Spensa, a teenage girl living among them, longs to be a pilot. When she discovers the wreckage of an ancient ship, she realizes this dream might be possible - assuming she can repair the ship, navigate flight school, and (perhaps most importantly) persuade the strange machine to help her.
Because this ship, uniquely, appears to have a soul.

Great young adult novel for anyone aged 10 to 110.
Space adventure in which the protagonist, Spensa, has to find and face the truth. Full of originality, brilliantly-written dogfights and interactions between great characters who I'm looking forward to following in book II.

Another Sanderson Gem
I purchased this book on pre-order and started listening immediately upon it's release. I have read most of Brandon Sanderson's work, I find him one of the most compelling story-teller's in the sci-fi/fantasy genre. I was not disappointed with Skyward, it's a page-turner through and through.
Of note is the wholesome nature of this story. It is suitable for young teenagers and above, with a deceptively simple narrative that nonetheless highlights Sanderson's ability to polish a story to its essence. The character-work is front and centre, in true coming-of-age style. However, it is the world-building that occurs during the story that truly captivates and speaks to the compelling series that this first book introduces us to. That said, every word in this book is purposeful, with no wasted time to establish details. Skyward gives the reader an intimate and personal viewpoint from which to grasp the context of a galaxy-spanning story. I look forward to listening again when Skyward 2 is released (Sanderson has apparently already drafted the next in this series).
The audio performance was also well produced. Sophie Aldred voices the protagonist brilliantly and does a solid job with the supporting roles as well. Her narrative delivery manages to draw you in, allowing the listener to feel the emotion of the protaganist whilst sustaining the sense of immersion throughout fast-paced action scenes.

Entertaining and surprising story
Brandon Sanderson is a long time favorite for me and this story did not disappoint. It felt slightly different from his other works but by no means less entertaining. To me it felt like i was listening to a star wars movie being narrated. And I absolutely loved that. The one thing i disliked about the book is that i wished it would have been longer.

very young adult, stretches credulity at times
the narration is top notch. story concept is brilliant. plot etc are extremely young adult no layers and complexity. serendipity in the story sometimes stretches credulity.
would still recommend for the concept and the narrator.

Really enjoyed this book by the end
I was curious about this book. Then I was intrigued. Then sucked in. Then hating that it was ending! Sanderson is a master of writing unique and gripping stories. Loved it and it's worth a credit!

incredible
narrator was incredible. story draws you in and you can't put it down. I had thought that I had become somewhat apathetic in life, but this story and narration gave me a reason to get up in the morning. it's been years since something was that attention catching.

Better version with Sophie Aldred
Much better version
This series was promoted for "young adults" audience. I think it was more apparent in the other version narrated by Suzy Jackson.
This version, narrated by Sophie Aldred feels slightly more mature. Also M-bot sounds better in this version, for some reason the Irish/Scottish? accent makes its quirky character better stand out.

Another great Book from the Sanderson
The book is closer in style to the Rekkoners than either mistborn or stormlight. Yet he still has his well known charme when exploring a completely new setting.
The idea of the unlikely hero finding a chance to fulfill her dreams is a bit like Eragon, but the similarities end there. No magic this time.
I am looking forward to part two, shouldn't be too long.

It's the best audio book ever!
While I never thought I could be interested in what things people learn in flight school, Brandon Sanderson explained Spensa's challenges in such a thrilling way, I couldn't stop listening and always was eager to hear more! Also, I can imagine this is the first book better listened to than read - the invigorating, motivated voices are so fun to listen to, it has been a real joy! The humour of the machine also made me laugh out loud several times. Thank you for all the fun I had with this book. Now I'll be listening to every single one of Sanderson's books!

Danke lieber Gott

Amazing book made even greater by awesome narrator
I love this book. And this audio narration is the best version making it even better than the original text!
I've been reading SciFi for decades, but this is by far my favorite. Though it has been written with younger audience in mind, it is such a masterpiece that readers in all ages can fully enjoy. While I am a fan of Brandon Sanderson's work, I admit that the best feature of this audio book is actually the wonderful skillful narration by Sophie Aldred. This is not only the best version of the book, but her masterful voice acting has actually elevated the book. I was even a bit disappointed that the original text didn't feature the amazing accents she created. My particular favorite, and the absolutely best thing about the book, is the voice and accent for the M-Bot character. I hope the narrator gets some recognition for this.
