Description
A Wall Street Journal bestselling series. A deep diving investigator is pulled into the depths of a string of unsolved serial murders in a riveting thriller by the Amazon Charts bestselling author of Sea Storm.
When a young woman washes ashore on a Fort Lauderdale beach, Sloan McPherson of the Underwater Investigation Unit is called in to consult. Sloan’s instinct says murder, but even then, there are too many questions.
For answers she reaches out to Gwen Wylder. The Miami homicide detective is notorious for being manipulative, bitter, a tyrant to her peers, and wicked smart. And she demands something in return from Sloan: fresh insight into seemingly unrelated cold-case murders and disappearances—and a possible serial killer trolling the Florida coast.
As loose ends of the old files begin to come together, another woman disappears. Sloan and Gwen are certain she’s the newest link in a deadly chain. They are determined to track her down before she dies, but they soon find themselves in uncharted waters. And the deeper Sloan and Gwen go, the stranger the case gets.
Commentaires
“The plot comes together like the proverbial puzzle, each juicy piece adding a bit to a disturbing big picture. A savvy police procedural that executes a familiar formula with panache.”—Kirkus Reviews
“Mayne combines a brilliant, innovative female lead with a plausibly twisty plot. Kinsey Millhone fans will love McPherson.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“Mayne creates a world that blends the crime writing of Michael Connelly with high-tech oceanography in his Underwater Investigation Unit series…The series never ceases to be fascinating, making characters sink or swim as lives are on the line and the story veers in unexpected directions. Required reading for any suspense fan.”—Library Journal

Thoroughly Enjoyed this Book!!!!
I’ve been a fan of Andrew Mayne since listening to his The Naturalist, the first book in the Theo Cray series (if you haven’t listened to that series I Very Highly Recommend it). Since then
I went back and purchased every book he had written and enjoyed them all.
This is book 4 in the Sloan McPherson Under Water Investigation series. I have enjoyed all four books in this standalone series. If you haven’t listened to any of the books I would suggest at least listening to book 1 first for background. Although it is not necessary it does help to understand the characters better.
Sloan and her new supervisor (Gwen Wylder) believe they have discovered a serial killer who has been getting away with murders that appear (at first glance) to be unrelated. Slogan’s boss has a reputation in on the homicide force to be a loose cannon. She’s moody, unpredictable and behind her back referred to as crazy.
At first Sloan is doubtful but soon comes around until the make a trip to NC where a woman was thought to be abducted. When her name appears in the news she comes forward to say she wasn’t missing but refused to answer any questions. Wylder believes the woman is lying or covering something up. The local police begin looking at her like there is something wrong with her. Sloan believes something is wrong with her. But what if she’s really on to something and everyone else is wrong?
This is a really well written procedural and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This book has my Highest Recommendation!!
Susannah Jones does a great job narrating.

Meh
Well this was a flop. No underwater investigation, but more importantly, a male author writing about more than one "crazy" female character. Mayne, it's 2023. Read the room.

Not the typical Underwater Investigation series
I have loved the Underwater Investigation series. Up till this one. The attraction to this series has been it is not your typical murder who done it. As the series implies it is all about crimes in and around the water. Sloan is at her best when she is underwater, whether fighting a giant crocodile or a villain, or investigating a murder on a cruise ship.
This story was 99% landlocked. And Sloan was sidelined or babysitting.
I hope the next book returns to the water

no underwater investigation in this one
I liked the first 3 in the series, but this one was just a messy whodunit. there were like 5 different crimes/victims (convoluted for sure) and the ending was almost avoided. weirdly there wasn't any real diving in this story, which was always the hook. also historically this author abruptly ends his books, but this one did really didn't even complete the mystery. hoping the next one is better.

I didn’t see this one…
Great story. This is the first Patterson I’ve read that was co-written. I didn’t see the end coming. Excellent narration.
