Description
Salvation is the first title in a stunning science fiction trilogy, the Salvation Sequence, by Peter F. Hamilton. For fans of Iain M. Banks and Dan Simmons.
Know your enemy – or be defeated.
AD 2204
An alien shipwreck is discovered on a planet at the very limits of human expansion – so Security Director Feriton Kayne selects a team to investigate. The ship’s sinister cargo not only raises bewildering questions, but could also foreshadow humanity’s extinction. It will be up to the team to bring back answers, and the consequences of this voyage will change everything.
Back on Earth, we can now make deserts bloom and extend lifespans indefinitely. Humanity seems invulnerable. We therefore welcomed the Olyix to Earth when they contacted us. They needed fuel for their pilgrimage across the galaxy – and in exchange they helped us advance our technology. But were the Olyix a blessing or a curse?
THE FAR FUTURE
Many lightyears from Earth, Dellian and his clan of genetically engineered soldiers are raised with one goal. They must confront and destroy their ancient adversary. The enemy that caused mankind to flee across the galaxy and that hunts us still. If they aren’t stopped, we will be wiped out – and we’re running out of time.
Continue the SF thrills with Salvation Lost and The Saints of Salvation.
Commentaires
Peter Hamilton knows how to build a world, and he's one of the best in the field at imagining complex societies, as displayed to magnificent effect . . . Salvation is a twisty and hugely satisfying SF thriller that opens a portal on a new and exciting series (Alastair Reynolds author of Revelation Space)

loved the story
Peter F Hamilton never disapoints! as for John Lee's performance, I only had a problem with the accents. there are many different accents and he didn't get them all. But over all, I loved the book!

Awful narrator
A space opera masterpiece is destroyed by the narrator's very mediocre performance. His annoying tone is always high, never modulated, always the same intonation. Very very annoying.

I couldn't follow the narrator/writer.
Might be better to pick up the hardcopy book. I found this quite monotonous. DNF

20 hours of only slightly interesting snippets
I am a Huge Peter F. Hamilton, but I feel this book stretched too much what is essentially an introduction to the story.
It tells only motheratly interesting fragments of many characters and different events, trying to create a big mistery, but ends up making an entire book filled with unimportant stuff.

It's OK. I usually Love Hamilton though
Canterbury Tales style stories within stories told around a table of pilgrims, also used in the Hyperion books.Great literary device. These stories however are only quite interesting.
For some reason Hamilton has made all his characters incredibly ethnically diverse which has proved a real challenge to the usually fantastic John Lee. I struggled to keep track of who was who while this nuance added nothing to the plot.
The far future stuff is pretty uninspired. Lord of The Flies meets Brave New World meets Enders Game while rehashing the animal servants from The Void. The enemy is very disappointing.

Messy and hard to follow
The beginning is very hard to follow on Audiobook. It picks up in the middle and you'll want to hear more in the end.

usually lee+hamilton works, not this time
Lee and Hamilton usually make a good combo - the shining example being audibooks from the commonwealth saga. This time however they don't pull it off. The characters and their surrounding stories are quite flat with their motivations and background being very thinly explored. Lee's narration gets confusing with the changes in perspective depending on the character and so does the story in some parts.
The entire story feels like it suffers from an incomplete worldbuilding and as a result of that Hamiltons usually very descriptive sceneries and plots including their narration fall short of the standards the other books set.
If youre looking for the usual Hamilton tropes from portals, future tech buzzwords, the phrase "jesus wept" used in the highest quantity of any Hamilton book yet and fantastical technology you will find them here - but be prepared for disappointment when comparing this to the other works of Hamilton.

What’s god got to do with it?
Although I enjoyed this book and love John lees reading style, it does grate on me that Peter Hamilton insists on bringing a divine creator into his stories. Its distracting and the one element that makes me want to classify his books more in the fantasy section rather than science fiction.

Probably better if read - or after a second listen
I usually like Hamilton’s sprawl of characters and his imagination, making for such rich world building. However, this book was a bit of a jumble, as it was not one story moving forward. Instead, the main story was actually quite short and the bulk of the book consists of stories of how the team members came to be part of the team (and interspersed with the story of another group far in the future).
While the last 5% were good and made everything come together, setting up for some actual confrontation in the next book in the series, the major part was mostly a slog through backstory and background buildup. I did not enjoy that quite as well as I’d hoped.
John Lee has a great voice, but I find some of his intonation and word spacing a bit jarring. And while I (as a non-native English speaker) find his handling of accents quite good it is sometimes hard to sense when he changes person in a conversation due to that.

Not one of Hamilton's best (yet), bad narrator
The story is a little long-winded, but entertaining enough not to get boring. The entire novel is just a large scale set-up for what's to come, combined out of multiple story lines of quite a few characters. It'll be interesting how this plays all out in the sequel, and this will determine if consuming this novel is worth it.
One big disadvantage of this novel is the narrator, as with most of the recent PFH novels. John Lee is just horrible. He reads way too fast and doesn't allow for breaks, so many passages, especially dialogue, seems quite rushed and he also doesn't do a good job in distinguishing between characters by different intonation, etc. It's very hard to follow who's speaking sometimes, and what annoys me the most is knowing that listening could be a lot more entertaining with a better narrator.

Get the book - Story OK but exhausting to listen
Story is confusing due to the frequent shifts in plotlines, flash backs and change in narrating characters. I believe this would make for a great read, but as an audiobook, i had to force myself to finish it.
I found myself not enjoying this due to two main reasons:
1. It sounds to me like John Lee just read this one to get it over with.
2. The structure of the chapters made it hard to navigate on different playback devices (mobile, Alexa) because they are named after the plotline. So that chapter 1 would be "Juloss" Chapter 2 would be "The assessment Team" and Chapter 3 would be "Juloss" again,
The confusion about the chapter navigation combined with the mechanical reading resulted for me in just launching a random chapter without even bothering anymore to find the last position i actively remember hearing. Just like jumping into a waterfall of blablabla until i fall asleep.

Confusing Storyline
Maybe as a paper-book this story is good, but it's too confusing as an audiobook and keeps meandering along without managing to make me care about characters and storyline. Because there are so many characters and timelines interwoven I was just lost halfway through even though the excellent narrator does his best to breathe life into the characters.

Langsamer, arg konstruierter Aufbau

All denen: Viel Spaß beim Hören.

Mieser Sprecher
Extrem schlechter Sprecher. Habe es keine 10 Minuten ertragen.
Extremely bad narrator. Couldn't bear to listen to him for more than 10 minutes.
