Description

The decision to start a new life is never an easy one, but for Joe the transition was far from figurative. Becoming a permanent addition to a game world, it doesn't take long to learn that people with his abilities are actively hunted. In fact, if the wrong people gained knowledge of what he was capable of, assassins would appear in droves.

In his pursuit of power, Joe fights alongside his team, completes quests, and delves into the mysteries of his class, which he quickly discovers can be practiced only in secret. Ultimately, his goal is to complete every mission, master every ability, and learn all of the world's secrets. All he has to do is survive long enough to make that happen.

Ritual is necessary for us to know anything

I really did not want to like this book. I wanted Dakota Krout to keep putting out his Divine Dungeon series until it was finished. Now, I'm torn. I still want the Divine Dungeon series, but now I also want MORE Ritualist. Krout is an incredible writer, and you get sucked into the story immediately. I appreciate how he gets the character of Joe into the game quickly and doesn't really screw around with all the usual angst or cognitive dissonance most MC's display when they are about to go into a virtual world permanently. Nope, we go straight into the game, and we are better for it.

I really appreciate that Joe gets a secret class, with special skills, and that he works for a hidden god. It's fun watching him try to keep things straight, because once the cat is out of the bag then he loses all kinds of benefits. And he has some sweet skills. The only thing that really throws me off is that the MC, Joe, enters the VR permanently because he is a quadrapalegic, and still opts to get a body that will be winded from walking to fast and can be beheaded from a paper cut. You would expect him to take a healthy vibrant body, but I will say his choice does make sense if you consider that he is in it for the long haul. He has a long distance perspective that few others have. Additionally, Krout is about the only dude I know that can make a healer not only exciting but totally a bad grass mamajamma. Most people go swordsman, rogue, or wizard. Dakota manages to make the cleric interesting. Plus the ritual stuff and the occultist proffesion suck you in.

Vikas Adams had me waaaaay back with the Divine Dungeon number one, Dungeon Born. I loved his characterizations and the humor he injects with his voice. There are few narrators who are as skilled as he is, and he really moves the story along at his pace. The man is a pleasure to listen to, and his female voices are just as good as his male ones.

I gove Krout points for including a nod to my beloved Dungeon, Cal, in this book and can see the similarities in attitudes. Both are fair, easily annoyed, and ready to dole out proper punishments and rewards. Can we see a nod to everyone's favorite wisp in the next book, Dakota?

I loved the cover, the wolfman looks awesome, and we get to see Joe right in the middle of a ritual. It looks slick, and you know that this book is going to feature some hardcore monsters and some deadly magic. Lava Worms, anyone? Joe is a fun character, and I really look forward to seeing more of him in the future. Now, we just need to get the Divine Dungeon series caught up and I'll be satisfied. YOU will be satisfied if you get this book. This is, without question, one of the best LitRPG/GameLit books I've ever read! Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

If this review helped, please press the YES below. Thank you immensely!!!

Masterpiece

Dakota Krout, as always, delivers a phenomenal story. I thought it would be hard for him to top his Dungeon Born series, yet he managed to pull of an amazing new story. I'm fully hooked, eagerly awaiting the next in the series!

The Ritualist is one of the most interesting takes on LitRPG I've had the pleasure of hearing. He doesn't turn his main character into a "Mary Sue", making him fight for every bit of progress.

Do NOT skip this, it's definitely worth the listen. Vikas Adam delivers a strong performance, combining with Krouts great story for a delightful listen.

Excellent Book and Start of a New Series

The book is excellent. I enjoyed his other series (hopefully more to come!) and I am always leery to move laterally in an author's works in case they are a one-trick pony. But rest assured, if you liked the Divine Dungeon, you'll enjoy this one, too. If you like any litRPG, you'll like this one. If you've never read any litRPG, there's still a good chance you'd find this enjoyable; it'd be an excellent soft intro to the genre.

(Dakota Krout is starting to focus on his writing full-time, so here's hoping he can start cranking out books even faster! I mean, it's not like he's a certain authoR.R. who takes forever to write a new book, but when the books are as great and enjoyable as his are, loyal fans - like me - don't want to wait any longer than we must! Start listening to - or reading - Krout now and say you knew him back when!)

I love this author

A new series by the same narrator and author who did Dungeon Born (also a must read if you like this genre). Like the series Dungeon Born we have a well thought out plot with plenty of room to continue the series for a long time, humor that is good and doesn't intrude upon the other moments, plot twists that I doubt anyone could see coming and MADE SENSE. Narrator knocked it out of the park once again.

Another great book from this duo.

If you are new to Krout works, this is a great book to start. YOU DO NOT NEED TO READ HIS OTHER WORKS TO PICK THIS UP. If you are a long time reader/listener it has a lot of hidden jokes for you as well.

Good overall

It's definitely worth read overall. Though you aren't going to miss the author's politics over the course of the book.

so much fun!

I do not see myself as a prude but It's been hard recently to find good fantasy books that aren't dripping with foul language sex and overall angst. But I feel as if the other half of fantasy novels are overly simplistic and Unengaging but this author excel's at writing a fun humorous action packed story that you can read as an adult and not feel like you're being talked down to this is by no means A children's book But I wouldn't be incredibly self-conscious about having a child listening to this book with me

I have read over 200 books and this is in my top 5

I have read and listened to over 200 books, by big name famous authors, and this is one of my top 5 favorites of all time. I have even read the entire works of and Tolkien, ans Sanderson to just say a couple big fantasy names.

Now for some specifics on the book.
The main character is intelligent and highly relatable. I could put myself in his shoes, but he has enough character that he isn't just a self-insert placeholder like a lot of sci-fi protagonist.

The author also doesn't start him off at already highly skilled level, like a lot of book series do with their protagonists, nor is it the hero's journey formula of: unskilled protagonist insert a few training montage scenes, now he's skilled. You actually get to see him struggle and grow, but it is so fun and rewarding to listen to! Dakota is definitively the best writer at writing character skill development. He measures out the character's growth for you as Joe grows and it is done in a way that is intuitively grasp-able by the listener and it flows with the pacing. The book is in the LitRPG subgenre but skill measuring is not arbitrary numbers.

The protagonist is intelligent but not a super genius. He will not leave you pulling your hair out shouting "why did/didn't you do that." Nor does he fall into the reverse trap of having Batman like contingencies, plans, and deductive leaps. He is an intelligent person not a caricature. Dakota's books never have characters seeming to succeed or fail "as plot demands" like the pulp genre, they stay true to the character, yet he still weaves a masterful story about them and a world that will leave you wanting to turn over every rock looking for all the hidden gems. If you have ever played any game and explored to find all the hidden content, and cool secrets, then this book is for you!

A masterpiece of MMORPG LITerature!

I inhaled the book in 2 days and listened to the Audiobook a few times now. I love it! This book is amazing, as all Dakota Krouts books apparently are. Dakotas world building is great, enough is explained to understand the characters and motivations, but you keep hoping for more thrilling answers. In my opinion this book doesn't get boring for a minute, but I'm a huge nerd that loves these kind of books.

Vikas Adam is an amazing narrator! 5/5*

Best LitRpg I've ever read (er.. listened to)

I'm having a hard time, telling more about it than I already did in the title without spoilers. So let me just say: If you plan on reading/listening to a lit-rpg story, this one seems to be on the best choices for that.

The protagonist is likable, the world believable and the plot creates tension without having the need for the main character to facing life-threatening events all 3 pages. Even with lit-rpg not being my main genre, I have finished this story in 3 days.

The narrator is making a fine job. The one-star deduction is highly unfair, even in my eyes, but I am listening to my books often in environments (like my car) where the volume difference, which is used to create tension, gets unbearable, where one has to decide to either not being able to listening to the quit parts or to get half a heart attack with the loud parts.

I hope, audible will some day add an option for an automatic volume adjustment.

Only for MMORPG fans.

The first chapter is horrible, both the story and performance. I almost dropped the audiobook because of it. Hovewer, it quickly improves after that and continues at a steady level.

Amazing

Dakota Krout is by now amongst my favourite 3 authors. I already loved the "Dungeons" series and found it unique in a utmost positive way. This new series starts off with "The Ritualist" and what can I say.. it is grand! Amazing story, great character development, many interesting characters, complex venues and good voice acting. 9.5/10 I'm waiting excited for the next part of either series.
