Description
Whispers, rumors, and horror stories abound about The Barrens and the strange creatures that lurk within them. Determined to find the remaining vampires that stood against his father in the war, Braith knows that it’s dangerous to enter the inhospitable land, but that they must if they are to have a chance at gaining allies to help overthrow the king.
Though he once knew the powerful vampires that are rumored to reside within The Barrens, he is unsure what to expect if they succeed in finding them. He will do whatever is necessary, though, to ensure a future for himself and Aria. Aria is fearful of entering into the land she’s heard nothing but cautionary tales about, but she’s determined to help Braith locate the vampires that may help them with their cause. She is fascinated and amazed by the world they uncover within, one that is unlike anything she has ever seen before.
However, the more immersed they become in a world that she doesn’t entirely understand, the more she realizes that it won’t be the war, or even the king that will eventually tear her and Braith apart. It will be her.

Let's teach kids that anger and possession = love
I find the story generally interested. A future world run by vampires at least heads in a slightly new direction. I find no justification for why any vampire would want to treat humans as equals. I've listened to the first three books and I still don't see it. My biggest problem with the story is the relationship between Braith and Aria. He's over 100 years old while she is 17, yet somehow that doesn't matter because one he's a fatansy character and two it's "true love". Throughout the series he is continually possessive over her and gets angry whenever she does not consent to being controlled by him. He tries to isolate her from her family (something narcissists do) and doesn't want anyone to come near her. Yet this is never addressed as being unhealthy. Instead it's all justified because he loves her. This book is meant for a teenage audience. what are we teaching them by presenting Aria and Braith as a good couple? Following up on there are several male characters who make all the decisions for Aria including her father, brothers, long time friend, Braith, and other male vampires. Does she have a say in her life or even in fictional societies do we justify men making decisions for women? Overall I think the series sends some very problematic messages to teenagers that require a secondary conversation about healthy relationships.

Loved it
It’s like wow in the world they live in and the world the author has created. The struggles they go to unite the rebellions and and outcasts of vampires that were not in the kings domain. I recommend the series and I really enjoy reading along as well.

Ahhhh, I want book 4 on Audible!!!!! :(
Would you consider the audio edition of Refugee to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version but apparently I will have to with book 4.
What does Luci Christian bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She does a great job with the different accents and helps to mark the female characters from the male. Her voice increases the characters personality and the readers experience.

Wowed. Stunned. My heart..
This is the third book and it has fully captured me. It’s the book that convinced me to keep going. It’s not that I didn’t like the books up to this point or anything but my attention could have easily started up to this point.
They love they have! The pain they have to go through “for the greater good”.. heart breaking. I have hope for them yet! Too many that wish them to fail and I just know they are a true love that will prevail! I especially like this take on vampirism.
Anyone saying they don’t like this book or series has to remember, in 2022 it’s easy to get caught up or use to a fast burning love/book. This is a slow burn. They work up to it. It’s not at all disappointing or anything else, it’s just different. But I’m entertain.. I think instead of remember this is paranormal fiction, readers keep wanting to compare it to “how believable” is this, and that’s just annoying.
