Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Description
It's not until you're broken that you find your sharpest edge.
A brilliant new series from the best-selling author of Prince of Thorns.
'I was born for killing - the gods made me to ruin.'
At the Convent of Sweet Mercy, young girls are raised to be killers. In a few the old bloods show, gifting talents rarely seen since the tribes beached their ships on Abeth. Sweet Mercy hones its novices' skills to deadly effect: it takes 10 years to educate a Red Sister in the ways of blade and fist.
But even the mistresses of sword and shadow don't truly understand what they have purchased when Nona Grey is brought to their halls as a bloodstained child of eight, falsely accused of murder - guilty of worse.
Commentaires
"This is a book very distinct from everything that came before; what it has in common though is a narrative that pulls no punches, and characters that are beautifully, brokenly, repellently, cleverly human." ( Sci-Fi and Fantasy Reviews)
"I had never thought it was possible to find a greater character than the Emperor Jorg Ancrath. I had never even slightly considered that there might be a fantasy world out there toppling that of Τhe Final Empire, and most definitely, I had never thought that I could love a book more than The Night Angel. But here we are." ( BookNest)
"Any other author is going to have to smack the ball way, way out of the park to top this read." ( Parmenion Books)

Couldn't get interested in the story
I think it was because of the monotone voice of the reader, I simply couldn't start to be interested in this. I would press play, listen for half an hour, get drowsy because of the absolute lack of tone of the reader and then press pause. The next day I would try again, listen for half an hour, get drowsy, pause. The day after it would be the same, and the day after it, and the day after it, until the end of the book.
Everyone is different I guess but I've listened to more than a hundred audiobooks in my life and I think the reader's performance -and I would even say acting sometimes- is as important as the quality of the story. And monochord doesn't fit me, I mean it's not horrible here, I've heard worse, but I've heard a lot better.

Good start not carried through.
It began quite well. Good buildup of characters. But then it becomes too much a YA book and the girls start making childish plans (making life and death decisions without involving adults) and the main character hurriedly gains insights from nowhere.
That said, I'm going to try the second book.

Difficult to listen to
Narrator was really tough to understand.
Different accents with unclear enunciation.
Words get eaten up in her voice.
I had to really concentrate on what she's saying to listen properly. That is alot of effort while driving.

You'll never want this story to end
This is a book that, once you start it, grips you with iron hands. My only criticism is the narrator. She has terrible articulation. She merges words and is hard to understand some phrases.

Mixed bag
I don’t know who produced the audiobook but he should have been more careful. I always listen with earbuds and there are very few thinks more disgusting than hearing someone swallow in your ear. Also it’s very very low volume. That being said the book was ok and the narrator was good enough. Let’s hope the next has more fight scenes as they are the authors strong suit.

Interesting world and great action
Very nice story. The kind with which you sometimes stay extra time in your car to finish a chapter.
The world is interesting. The characters are flawed superhumans (a great combination). The action is wonderful with excellent "bullet-time" descriptions.
My only issue is with some the main character's decisions, which kind of serve the narrative in a forced way.
The narration is lovely and rich. well acted. But I sometimes had trouble making out the words. And I felt too many of the characters got a "special" accent.

Good story, great reading
Loved how the different characters were given different accents and voices. Made them very recognizable.
The story was gripping, though a bit predictable for me and slightly too gory. Though I do like that the main character is not just black and white but acts in a bit of a grey zone - even if her motives are anything but grey.

Loved it
please ignore the reviews that try to make the analogy of this being "a more adult HP".
it's not really.
The performance only got 4 stars because there are a few scenes where you can slightly hear swallowing or page turning. it's nothing major really but it did pull me out for a few seconds whenever it happaned.
The story gets 4 stars for feeling more like one and a half books, than just one. it does drag a little in some parts, but it would come down to likes and preferences if it bothers you.
I loved the main charakter and how much she develops over the story. everything being written in first person makes her feel the most alive.
the less prelevant development of the co-cast feels natural, because of the warped perspective of the main character and her inherent inability to understand people.
