This book is an exhaustive guide that explores the diverse landscape of accessible leisure and fitness. The book details how traditional sports like baseball, basketball, and skiing are transformed through auditory cues, tactile markers, and sighted guides to empower individuals with visual impairments.
Beyond athletics, Kysor provides practical resources for hobbies such as amateur radio and knitting, while also highlighting modern DIY technological adaptations like audio beacons and haptic navigation.
By cataloging specialized equipment, support organizations, and inclusive community programs, this work serves as a vital roadmap for fostering independence and physical well-being within the blind community.
Dan began his career as a disability rights reporter for pacifica radio in berkeley as well as metro media radio in new york reporting on the demonstrations in san francisco that spawned the disability rights movement He then went to work for Judy Heumann as her public relations director at the center for independent living in Berkeley.
He was the originator of the phenomenally successful "Global Blind Exchange, GBX, an internet site before the popularization of the world wide web.
He became director of Governmental Affairs for the California Council of the Blind where he oversaw legislation creating a division for the blind, stricter enforcement of guide dog interference laws and a state building tactile signage mandate.
He is now retired and has published two other books, his memoirs, "Blind Like Me" and "A Diabetic's Guide to Shopping Common Grocery Stores."
He resides with his room mate Ann Sylvia in Sacramento California and is the proud handler of Holly, a female chocolate labradore Seeing Eye dog.
