Robert Llywellyn, a probation officer with years of experience but increasingly dissatisfied with his job, is confronted with an unusually distasteful new probationer, a Catholic priest, Father Mahoney. Instead of deserved incarceration, the priest, convicted of abusing choirboys, is placed only on probation and becomes Llywellyn's regrettable responsibility.
A psychologist, Dr. Weber, who has worked closely with the probation department for years, is tasked with assessing and monitoring the priest. The unrepentant priest violates probation, goes into hiding, and is provided a new identity with the assistance of a rogue Catholic organization, The Golden Cross. Llywellyn pursues him with the help of his K9 dog, Peaches. The story evolves into a sophisticated psychological drama that confronts the reader with an unsettling probability: we all live on probation—answerable not only to the law and others but also to ourselves.
