    Description

The Great Crusade has swept across half the galaxy, a million human worlds now embracing the truth and reason that comes with allegiance to the rule of Terra. But even such unparalleled success comes at a cost.

Rumours abound that the Emperor plans to step back from the Crusade and raise one of his primarch sons to lead in his stead. Faced with the bitterly noncompliant human empire of Gardinaal and a leaderless host of Ultramarines, Thousand Sons and Emperor’s Children at his Legion’s command, the Iron Hands primarch Ferrus Manus decides to make an example that even the Emperor cannot ignore.

    Missed opportunities

The book barely had any ferrus in it and it focused entirely too much on the side characters. I learned. Nothing new or interesting on either the ironhands or their primarch. I am a huge ironhands fan and going through this in a primarch focused book is beyond disappointing.

Iron Hands gone mad. Run away.

“Spoilers” I really did not like the story/portrayal of Ferrus. His whole motivation throughout the story is he wants to be first among his brothers and declared war master by quickly conquering a noncompliant world with heavy industry. The world won’t surrender and bloodies his forces. So what does he do? He bombs the entire planet except for where the leadership is rendering the planet uninhabitable and wrecking the industry he was ordered to secure. Then he goes and kills off the planetary leadership. Really??

This is beyond stupid. ANY primarch could have just shown up and done the exact same thing. Was I reading about the night haunter by mistake?

At least in Fulgrim’s novel he tries to stand out by conquering a planet with only himself and a handful of warriors. A far more impressive feat than this idiocy.

    A good story.

This is the story of Ferrus Manus and his Legion, the Iron Hands.

Unlike Lorgar, Bearer of the Word (and presumably the other Primarchs books) this book does not center around Ferrus Manus and his upbringing: instead what we have is a tale of how the surrounding world reacts to him and how he interacts with it.

This story is told from a couple different perspectives, and is set during a compliance campaign which is perfect for a story centered around a Primarch. While some might feel that this book is missing the point, I have a theory that Ferrus is supposed to be a mystery - even to his own sons.

Take from it what you will, but ultimately it is a good story set during the days before the Heresy - before Horus set the skies on fire and dragged the Imperium into a brutal civil war. Give it a try; you can always return it and spend the credit on a different title if the style is not to your satisfaction.

Not as good as the other Primarch books

The other books in this series give a solid look into the history that shaped a Primarch. This does not. It was a solid Iron Hands story but a poor Ferrus Manus story.

Ferrus is akin to a child that trying to cram a square peg into a round hole, to the detriment of all involved.

The Imperium might arguably be better off without him, which is a bit sad to consider. Well written and read though as always though! Cheers.

Great insight into Ferrus and great moments

This is one of my favorite books because I absolutely love Ferrus Manus. This book doesn't explain Ferrus's history or childhood, but instead gives you insight into his actions during the Great Crusade and gives him great moments.

HAHA The story is so dumb. But....

The narrator is splendid I believe there is only one for this book. He does a good job of finding voices to flesh out the characters to make them feel human. Even Ferrus sounds decent. The characters pop and feel lively, really enjoyed side character banter. However, the story is dumb so dumb. I can't talk about it without spoilers so.... You have been warned. The story occurs before all the Primarchs have been located so before the triumph at Ulanor. With this in mind "somehow" Ferrus knows he must prove himself so that his father might chose him for war master! In doing so he makes many costly decisions not mistakes decisions on another world which loyal forces called for aid on. He makes impossible or unreasonable demands of his Guardsmen and Astartes this is noted by Ferrus himself his Astartes and his Guard regiments. This inevitably makes those beneath him act desperately. This culminates in a Captain of the Emperors Children (who tag along because Fulgrim thought what's the worst that could happen?) winning him the battle by sacrificing himself in an off-screen death, which just pisses Ferrus off. XD. The story wraps up with Ferrus realizing he won't be picked as war master because he doesn't have the mind for it. However, he resolves to not change or learn anything from this engagement "and fight as the gorgon is meant to fight". Which since there is no in depth fleshed out lore for them, we can only guess at. Not to mention 30k Iron hands combat tactics change a LOT alongside Salamanders and Raven Guard during the HH.

    TL;DR
In other words, you are seeing Ferrus at his worst here because he is acting out of the ordinary.

    It deserves better

Seems like Ferrus got the Boba Fett treatment and became a side character in his own story. The story was fairly good on its own— suitable for a story set during the Great Crusade, but a story fit for the Primarch Series? No.

Also such a shame that a planet with a cool name like “Gardinaal” would only ever be featured in this one off story— a name like that should have a whole guardsman regiment for the tabletop.

As usual, Jonny K never disappoints with his tremendous vocal chops.

    Fun time

Great kinda pulp sci-fi. Do you like Warhammer? Do you like giant angry men breaking things? Do you like space marines? Get this book.

If you are looking for something to change your opinion on the world, life, or with any great insights, this book isn’t it. But it’s a lot of fun from beginning to end.

    Problematic

„Never disappoint a customers expectation“ they say in marketing.
Some of the primarchs books seem to have one flaw. The customer expects the Primarchs I. The focus.
The book does it, but in the very end.
So I am not sure what to think of the whole book In general.
I would say it’s definitely a recommendation for Iron hands fans.
But maybe BL should have thought about naming the books maybe „tales from
The great crusade“ and all I read would have gotten 5 stars

    More subtle than expected

The voice is even and well paced bit at times feels a little too indifferent. The story, at times, feels rather inconsequential but in the end a few patterns emerge that show core developments of Primarch and legion. More subtle than I expected from Iron Hands.
