    This book is a powerful, erudite, and fascinating account of this history which hasn’t yet been paralleled. I appreciate especially how it debunks various myths (stemming from ritzy tour guides and archaeologists alike) and lays out instead how much we *don’t* know about this period - which, it turns out, is actually far more interesting. I’ve listened to this twice now, both times while visiting sites in the Vesuvius region, and while it was a little overwhelming the first time around, once I knew the excavations better it opened up a whole new world of understanding. To present such nuanced, finely detailed content in such an accessible way is a real triumph, bravo!
