Our Lady of the Intersection is a recitation of two interspersed parallel texts (one being a semi-fictional memoir and the other being brief lectures and meditations about the palm trees of Los Angeles-and the texts' relationship to each other becomes clear by the end) set to original music and sounds throughout, a sort of narrated modern tone poem.
This audio book contains the complete text of the spoken word performance, and the music and soundtrack that was created (partly composed, partly improvised concurrent with the recording of the recitation) for and directly to it. The story centers on Danny Romero, a suburban teen in 1979 who lands a job at the trendiest restaurant in Hollywood, at Sunset and Highland ("the Intersection"), where the various components of L.A.-the gays. the Mexicans, the movie and music stars, and the bohemian freaks-converge... and he learns that growing up is like taking a trip through sexual, linguistic, and musical identities… oh, and a s--tload of palm trees. Simón. Una cagalera de palmas. It was created to be heard, listened to, with word and music inextricably entwined.
