Description
The grandson of a US senator has been brazenly kidnapped out of a hotel room in St. Louis. His life has been threatened if the senator cannot raise the ransom money, an exorbitant amount that even he can’t scrape together. Ultimately, the boy’s fate falls into the hands of a select group of undercover agents known for their discretion, cleverness, and bravery - the Pinkertons.
When Allan Pinkerton realizes the confidential nature of the kidnapping, he calls in his best field agents, a group of five professionals with specialized skills and unconventional backgrounds. The team is headed up by ex-Marine Captain John McKenzie. He is to be joined by a beautiful and alluring actress and former spy during the Civil War, Alicia Faye; a clever magician and con artist, Harry Howser; a young but brilliant scientist, Jimmy Piper; and McKenzie’s Marine friend and expert hand-to-hand combat fighter Patrick Nelson.
With no clue as to whether or not the boy is still in Missouri or who the perpetrators might be, the detective team must comb the city of St. Louis in their quest for answers, including through the extensive dockyards of the shipping industry along the Mississippi River.

modernized western about mythical detectives
The phraseology and cliches in the beginning show modern content transplanted into the Old West with glorification of an agency based on proven false myths. if you want a modern story SRT in a stylized Western setting, be my guest right down to Southerners evil, Yankees pure good. I'll take my Westerns period specific and.honest. I am no fame of Jesse James but I know who gorged him and they we were bluecoats. and I know when the US Cavalry ran out of Confederates to kill (in uniform and out of uniform) they turned their swords to the Native Tribes...

The Pinks
This is an interesting tale about the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Pinkerton’s history is extensive. At the height of its power, the Pinkerton Detective Agency was the largest private law enforcement organization in the world. They also have a darker side to their history; the labor strikes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Homestead Strike of 1892, and in the late nineteenth century Pinkertons were also hired as guards in coal, iron, and lumber disputes in Illinois, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, the Great Railroad Strike of 1877, and the Battle of Blair Mountain in 1921. This story is all about rescuing the grandson of a former U.S. Army General, now a U.S. Senator.

Fun listen
highlight of this story: the bits of historical trivia shared, eg origins of the English terms ‘state room’ on a boat and ‘private eye’ for detective.

Pinkerton rescue
This was a little stuffy for my liking. I'm glad that they did the rescue but I would have liked more cowboy less detective novel.

Great for all ages
My husband is 99 years old in march and likes all of R W Stones books but especially enjoyed this book. He would love to find another author who writes similar to Mr Stone. Keep up the good work.
