This is a standalone series, meaning any book can be listened to in any order.
From the safety of the Deep Hole Sanctuary, two are sent to the surface for the first time in nine years. Rumors, tales, and expectations for the world above are that they will find a desolate wasteland filled with mutated animals and bands of roving hoards of starving people. It's a death sentence.
This book is about the events, of course, but more so about the people and how they evolve to cope with life on the surface, one they have not seen since age seven. What they encounter, how they handle each crises, and their growth as they survive in a world unknown and unexpected. Clary's books always contain unexpected twists and turns, so the listener never knows where the story is going—and that is part of the fun.
