    Description

"Everyone gets mad at hustlers, especially if you're on the victim side of the hustle. And Miles knew hustling was in his veins."

Miles Morales is just your average teenager. Dinner every Sunday with his parents, chilling out playing old-school video games with his best friend, Ganke, crushing on brainy, beautiful poet Alicia. He's even got a scholarship spot at the prestigious Brooklyn Visions Academy. Oh yeah, and he's Spider-Man.

But lately Miles' Spidey sense has been on the fritz. When a misunderstanding leads to his suspension from school, Miles begins to question his abilities. After all, his dad and uncle were Brooklyn jack-boys with criminal records. Maybe kids like Miles aren't meant to be superheroes. Maybe Miles should take his dad's advice and focus on saving himself.

As Miles tries to get his school life back on track, he can't shake the vivid nightmares that continue to haunt him. Nor can he avoid the relentless buzz of his Spidey sense every day in history class, amid his teacher's lectures on the historical benefits of slavery and the importance of the modern-day prison system. But after his scholarship is threatened, Miles uncovers a chilling plot, one that puts his friends, his neighborhood, and himself at risk.

It's time for Miles to suit up.

    "You Are Just Like Me"

A haunting line that resonates through the book, resulting in expertly crafted and truly intimate tension. Reynolds managed to capture Miles's psyche and struggles, bringing social issues into the personal world of a super hero. Very relevant in today's America, the book presents antagonists that reflect a real and looming threat in contemporary society.

    Not a good Spider-man book

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

People who like stories that have a lot of school work in them and no action

Has Miles Morales: Spider-Man turned you off from other books in this genre?

I love super hero books but Miles barely does anything interesting in this book and the villain is a joke

Have you listened to any of Guy Lockard’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Miles Morales: Spider-Man?

All of the school work and poems that the book mentions over and over literally 60% of the book

    Any additional comments?

Read something better. If you like superhero books listen to
    Steelheart

    Not much action

This was disappointing for me. Instead of being a great spider-man adventure, it dealt more with racial issues. It had some comedy from the sidekick, but the ending wrapped up WAY too quickly for me. So there wasn't a whole lot at the end.

Don’t do a “Spider-Man No More” story as your first/only book

the first 4/5 of the story is Miles wanting to be a regular student so no Spider-Man action at all.
Miles first dons his costume in the last hour of the story. The story does stick to landing.

His Spidersense at one point somehow warns him someone below is going to steal the shoes of another.

The narrator gives Miles quite a deep voice and accent and his mom a thick Spanish terrible accent. Both not consistent with how they are portrayed elsewhere.

    Quick Thlughts

Guy Lockard does a great exasperated angsts teenage voice, but his Hispanic accent comes off Jamaican. The story takes a hard turn into antiquated racism in the third act that I didn’t quite care for. I didn’t think it really servered the character or the story.
