Description

"British comic Russell Brand narrates this powerful combined memoir and personal growth lesson as if he were performing a one-man play.... [T]his audiobook reveals Brand's startling insights about how we human beings can make a lot of serious mistakes but somehow keep the faith about our potential for healing, love, and honesty in all of our affairs." (AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner)

This program is read by the author.

Russell Brand explores the idea of mentoring and shares what he's learned from the guidance of his own helpers, heroes, and mentors.

Could happiness lie in helping others and being open to accepting help yourself? Mentors - the follow-up to the New York Times best seller Recovery - describes the benefits of seeking and offering help.

"I have mentors in every area of my life, as a comic, a dad, a recovering drug addict, a spiritual being and as a man who believes that we, as individuals and the great globe itself, are works in progress and that through a chain of mentorship we can improve individually and globally, together.... One of the unexpected advantages my drug addiction granted is that the process of recovery that I practise includes a mentorship tradition.

"I will encourage you to find mentors of your own and explain how you may better use the ones you already have. Furthermore, I will tell you about my experiences mentoring others and how invaluable that has been on my ongoing journey to self-acceptance and how it has helped me to transform from a bewildered and volatile vagabond to a (mostly) present and (usually) focussed husband and father." (Russell Brand)

Mentors: How to Help and Be Helped describes the impact that a series of significant people have had on the author - from the wayward youths he tried to emulate growing up in Essex, through the first ex-junkie sage, to the people he turns to today to help him be a better father. It explores how we all - consciously and unconsciously - choose guides, mentors, and heroes throughout our lives and examines the new perspectives they can bring.

Slow down Russell!

Great book, great thoughts, great mentor.

This is overshadowed at times with how eloquent and complicated Russell speaks. Reading is fine as I could re-read the sentence a couple times to get the hang of what he means, but when he goes on tangents speaking out loud, it is very difficult to keep up with his train of thought. Slow down man! Your vocabulary is not commonplace, even to a grad student!

Also, this book is short compared to others. This is a pro and a con, as it gets to the point without wasting my time and does not fall into pandering territory. At the same time though, it's mildly frustrating to spend an audible credit on 3 hours of content when I'm used to 12+.

Still, I applaud Russell for spreading his message, worth your time overall! I look forward to anything else he has coming.

Thanks Russell for being a great mentor to us all.

I got this book under my own pretext that it would tell me how to be a mentor. In turn I truly learned what it means to be honest. We are all honest in our own way, no lie can go hidden as we hide behind our false personas. We can see the dishonesty in wearing make up and yet we accept it as a truth of beauty. Real beauty being that of a soul and not the superficial. I learned that we all have a deeper truth waiting to come out, hidden behind layers of fears and patterns of habit. I am a loof (luff). A person who avoids people, places, events, guilt, steering clear of confrontation and acceptance. A person who is known to be too honest, all while living a lie. I'm a man and I have physical cravings. A craving for survival so I drink, I eat, I lust. Turning the body into a temple to worship, when we should be praising our own temples as a place for God's love to shine. I'm deeply in need of a mentor like Russell Brand to help me navigate the travesties of life that have shaped my being. I can admit I am powerless and know that as a father and middle school teacher I must become more. I must be the light on the hill. I pray for us all to find the mentors we need. I love you all. Amen (It is truth)

Deep inspired thinking grounded y honest self reflection

Whenever Russell Brand chooses to share his verbal virtuosity you know you are in for a spectacular roller coaster ride of quick hitting fast building truths and metaphors and stories that make you laugh. This book contains all that brilliance which is just sort of delightful to behold but it couples that talent with a softer slower percolating narrative that gently brings the listener into the author’s process of attachment to the best part of people. He shows us how he develops trust in others and then self. The book gives the reader permission and encouragement to connect despite our collective disconnection. His words do much to alleviate alienation and despair.

This book is a poem

This wasn't the "How to" guide that I was hoping for, but I found it, nonetheless, a very pleasant experience. Russell is a wordsmith, and you can feel the sincerity come through his prose clearly.

I truly do like Russell, but this book isn't it.

I'm a fan of Russell's work (Under the Skin, Recovery, Revolution, Re:Birth), but there is a quality they all have that I felt was really missing in this book. I can't put my finger on it, I just didn't feel the connection here that I typically do. Obviously lots of people enjoyed it, so don't completely count it out on account of this one review, but it wasn't for me.

should be read, not listened to

great story-telling, introspective, thoughtfully constructed. there's depth that needs pondering and consideration that reading provides.

Great philosophy

Russell takes us on a journey of awakening as it happens. Becoming, with the help of others, a different person in society, yet still being himself. The humor and intelligence is still there. The only thing different is his behavior. I wish him the best of luck in his endeavor to change his world and the world around him. Truly admirable.
