Description

In Love Is a Choice, best-selling doctors Robert Hemfelt, Frank Minirth, and Paul Meier walk you through their 10 proven stages to recovery from codependency that results from external circumstances. Humans are susceptible to codependency because of our sinful tendency to use defense mechanisms to fool ourselves. In codependent relationships, deceitful games are played, and important Christian principles are often taken out of context and abused. God wants us to have healthy relationships with a balance between being dependent and independent.

The doctors describe how the most effective means of overcoming codependent relationships is to establish or deepen a relationship with Christ himself. They describe the causes of codependency, pointing out the factors that perpetuate it, and lead listeners through their 10 stages of recovery.

Great book, horrible Performance

Sounds like a robot reading. Christopher’s voice is good, But there is a staccato cadence that makes it seem as though it must’ve been recorded and edited word by word. It is literally frustrating to listen to

Great content... Awful Narration

Great content with Christian msg. I'll admit that the Christian message may be distracting for those outside the faith but I can say that I was able to look past its insistence on the relationship with Jesus to see through to the heart of the message of the book. The narration was the worst I've heard on audible... It needed to be sped up in order to be listenable and was probably the largest hurdle to clear in order to listen and enjoy this book.
That said, I've been able to heal myself and many of my relationships as a result of the material covered in this book and would gladly recommend it to others trying to escape the clutches of codependency.

After my first listen

A very practical and astutely insightful book. For a Christian, it integrates scripture with integrity to the biblical context encouraging spiritual growth. It helps to bring God's word to life in its application to healing codependency. This book contains insight which everyone with an open mind will find helpful in regard to improving inter-personal relationships. It is a must read and durable reference book.

Great book. Terrible narration!

The content of the book is incredible, but the person reading it is worse than a computer voice. I had to order the paperback to read it again so I can really get the full impact of the author’s intentions.

insightful

An outstanding insight into family dynamic as it pertains to dependency and co-dependency. The authors hold the delicate balance of psychological modelsand Biblical truths.

Self-help book with some Christian parts.

This book truly broadened my definition of what codependency looks like. Lots of successful people are struggling with these issues.

Great book - horrible presentation

I love the book’s content. But this staccato reading is painful to absorb. I will probably listen to the whole thing but this is brutal.

The Narrator

I’m only an hour or two in and, while the content has been great so far, I can only take the narrator in small doses. One good thing I will say is that he doesn’t fly through the material so fast I can’t keep up. However, the pace is excruciatingly slow. The book is read almost robotically, with little to no inflection, and with pauses between just about every word in each sentence, which prevents any possible conversational flow. It almost sounds as if there is a comma, between, every, single, word. I find it very distracting and find myself wanting to turn it off because I feel annoyed by it. As a result, it will probably take me much longer to get through this book than I had hoped. If the audiobook wasn’t so much more convenient for me, I would much prefer to read the hard copy myself.

Got what I needed

Although my family situation did not deal with alcoholism or drug addiction, major codependency issues were apparent that were very destructive and had significant impact on me as a child growing up and now as an adult. The book uses the alcohol and drug addiction treatment philosophy as their basis so for a large portion of the book I could not relate. However, when they spoke about codependency in general terms I began to connect and have many “AHA!” moments. I additionally had many revelations about myself and my parents that probably would not have happened if I didn’t read this book. So, despite having trouble connecting to the first 10-12 chapters of the book, I would still recommend it bc when it did connect, it was explosive (for me at least). I was able to acknowledge and let certain emotions or expectations go. For me, that was priceless!
