Since the first major settlement by the Romans in AD 43, London has teemed with many different kinds of people. Scholars, merchants, soldiers, and scribes have all jostled with each other on the English capital’s overcrowded streets.
With a tightly packed population all competing for space and resources in a confined area, and one as wealthy as London, there were always going to be people who would prove unscrupulous in their pursuit of health, wealth, and happiness. Put simply, London has had its share of bastards.
Some you may have heard of: Henry VIII, Jack the Ripper, and Doctor Crippen, to name just a few. But there are many through the ages who will be unknown to you, but whose bastardy will leave you amazed and appalled.
