Description

Many investors, including some with substantial portfolios, have only the sketchiest idea of how the stock market works. The reason, say Lynch and Rothchild, is that the basics of investing aren't taught in school. At a time when individuals have to make important decisions about saving for college and 401(k) retirement funds, this failure to provide a basic education in investing can have tragic consequences.

For those who know what to look for, investment opportunities are everywhere. The average high school student is familiar with Nike, Reebok, McDonald's, the Gap, and the Body Shop. Nearly every teenager in America drinks Coke or Pepsi, but only a very few own shares in either company or even understand how to buy them. Every student studies American history, but few realize that our country was settled by European colonists financed by public companies in England and Holland, and the basic principles behind public companies haven't changed in more than 300 years.

In Learn to Earn, Lynch and Rothchild explain in a style accessible to anyone how to read a stock table in the daily newspaper, how to understand a company's annual report, and why everyone should pay attention to the stock market. They explain not only how to invest, but also how to think like an investor.

Good Starter

What about Peter Lynch’s performance did you like?

Peter Lynch was very understandable and clear in what he read. I enjoyed listening to this audiobook and had no trouble understanding what he said.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

The opening story example was one I will remember on the differences on how to see your financial choices, what one should invest in and what is something that shouldn't be worried about. It helped me see that it is possible to save the money up to invest if you look at it at the right angle.

Any additional comments?

I felt this was a good eye opener and will help me on my start into my road to investing. One should not just take this book then jump into the market, but it will help you get started on the questions you should use to research and learn more about. My next steps are of course, learning all the different types of investing and which funds I may be more interested in investing with, be it mutual funds or index. There are so many choices and this at least puts many of them on my radar and helped me know what I need to know more about.

Good information for beginners. A little dated

Title says it all. Also, the advise doesn’t seem complete. Great starting point for beginners though.

summarized version of book

the book in general is great but this version is not.... it is summarized and does not go into detail the way that the actual book does... this is ok for listening to on a road trip or day at the beach but do yourself a favor and just go for the physical copy or at least a better version... Peter Lynch and John Rothchild did a great job of breaking things down...

Well read, fast paced, less repetitive than other books of its kind. I finally feel ready to move onto a textbook after this quick read

Average Read

If you are in stock market for a year, chances are you already know what is discussed in this book. However, good to run through this book as a reinforcement of what you might know from one of the best in business.

Not worth your time

This book is very dated and is not current on anything happening in this decade. The book does not Provide any specific advice to actually earning money or having an extra income. A waste of time.

seriously outdated but still relevant.

this book is seriously outdated and its references of companies, newspapers for review of stock prices and it's pre-internet era dialogue. That being said, the fundamentals of investing All Rise basic today as they were when this book was written. Five-star for content. it's a short listen, abridged. And read by the author.

A simple listen

Lynch takes you along for a lovely stroll on a sunny day in a park while discussing the basics of investing and the mindset of someone with experience. Worth it.
