Description
Spring, 1909, and Lady Hardcastle, amateur sleuth and all-round eccentric, is enjoying a well-deserved rest. But a week after a trip to the cattle market, Spencer Caradine, a local farmer, turns up dead in the pub, face-down in his beef and mushroom pie. Once again, it is up to Lady Hardcastle and her maid, Florence, to solve the case.
Armed with wit and whimsy, not to mention Florence’s mean right hook, the pair set out to discover what really happened and why. Was it poison or just ill luck?
As they delve further into their investigation, they encounter a theft where nothing is stolen, a séance with a troubled ghost and an ever-increasing number of Spencer’s family and friends who might just have motive for murder. One thing’s for sure: Lady Hardcastle has a mystery on her hands.
Revised edition: Previously published as The Spirit Is Willing, this edition of In the Market for Murder includes editorial revisions.

Clever intertwining of three fun mysteries
This is a terrific sequel to A Quiet Life in the Country. The book takes three mystery lines and intertwines them effectively. There is the death of a cruel man that might be from poisoning. A ghost accuses a member of the group doing a seance of murder. And the plaques and awards from a rugby club get stolen. I enjoyed the way the threads of the mysteries end up intertwined.
The book is very fun, with clever word play and banter between Lady Hardcastle and her maid, Florence, who narrates the book. I loved this book and am waiting on tenterhooks for the third book to released on June 15!

This narrator deserves an Oscar
I love this series. I enjoy a good English mystery, but this series is LOL funny! The narrator does a wide array of voices, each with its distinctive sound and character. This takes the story up a level--a really good story to a hysterically funny story with two starring female leads. She truly deserves a Grammy for her efforts. This book is more than credit worthy.....I actually BOUGHT the second book in the series because I couldn't wait for my next credit to come up. GET THIS, GET THIS, GET THIS!!!!

Plenty of murder suspects in English countryside
Once again Lady Hardcastle and her lady's maid tackle a murder investigation in the country. Plot is thick with suspects and paranormal activity, and keeps the reader busy trying to guess who and why someone would want a villager or two dead. A little more complicated plot than the previous adventure, but worth the read.

Fun book to listen to
This is the second book in this series that I have listened to. I purchased book one of the series as a kindle book with accompanying audio. I didn't like reading the book, but the audio version was wonderful. I think you need the English accents to make the story "live". The story line is a bit like Agatha Christie mysteries. The performance is very good, lots of different voices, not just someone reading the book. The story also has humor and a lightness that I have thoroughly enjoyed. I recommend this audible book to anyone who likes who done it type mysteries and also English settings at the turn of the century. Lady Hardcastle and Flo are exciting women for their time. Which makes it all the more fun.

I don't often use the word "QUAINT"...
but this series is QUAINT as hell. I love it. It's silly and adorable and Lady Hardcastle reminds me of my Godmother, just replace the British with Greek and the Brandy with Wine. It's charming and witty and just a great way to unwind at the end of the day. Elizabeth Knowelden has a wonderful array of voices and I can't wait for the next book.

Witty and quirky
I just love this sort of mystery, so I enjoyed this book as much as I did the first volume. Narrator Elizabeth Knowelden was once again spot on and conveyed the atmosphere perfectly. If you like a cozy, clean mystery with humour and witty dialogues, as well as a reasonable plot, I can recommend this series.

Absolut empfehlenswert!

A great fan
Right from the start of book 1 I've been a great fan of Lady Hardcastle and her "tiny servant" who, though slight, can look after herself (there's more to her than meets the eye). They help solve a murder case in their rural whereabouts in their own special way, are emancipated, have an adventurous past in India and China (which at times shocks the society they live in). It's always dissappointing when a book ends - but luckily there are books 3 + 4 !!!
