    Description

    Brought to you by Penguin.

Life can exist anywhere. And anywhere there is life, there is home.

In the swirling clouds of Venus, the families of la colonie live on floating plant-like trawlers, salvaging what they can in the fierce acid rain and crackling storms. Outside is dangerous, but humankind's hold on the planet is fragile, and they spend most of their days simply surviving.

But Venus carries its own secrets, too. In the depths, there is a wind that shouldn't exist.

And the House of Styx wants to harness it.

sad considering how great his previous novels were

pandering to the identity politics crowd , with what otherwise could have been a good story. I'm sure it will be praised and nominated for awards because it's the p.c. thing to do. very disappointed

    Amazing Author, Amazing Book

I'm so glad I found Derek Künsken through his Quantum series, each of which is a self-contained book by the way. I'm not saying this guy is finally hard scifi's answer to Brandon Sanderson, but... it's not impossible. He's that good. Künsken's genius is apparent in this book but the Audiobook recording is rough listening. I can't quite put my finger on what the issue is. The performance seems fine but like I'm listening to it behind a pane of glass or as though there's white noise I'm having to listen through. I listen to audiobooks every night but something about the recording or sound mixing just seemed off to me here. If you must listen to audiobooks instead of read though, it's not bad enough to skip this author. Everybody should be talking about this guy. Can't wait to see/hear what's next.

Excited for a new Kunsken book, very disappointed

I really enjoyed the authors previous books and I was looking forward to this one.

However, the plot was thoroughly boring and felt overtly "politically correct". None of the smart sci-fi from his previous books.

Also, I didn't enjoy the narrator at all. My wife may have summed it up best when she came into the room while I was listening to this book: "Are you listening to a book read by Amazon's Alexa?" She was asking it seriously, not as a joke.

In the end, with 4 hours left to go in the book, I realized I didn't care at all about the characters or what was going to happen to them. I realized I was listening to it as a chore to get on to the next book. So, for the first time, I returned it without finishing. Now, perhaps it's an incredibly slow burn and the last 20% of the book makes up for the first 80%, but I seriously doubt it. Too bad, because the actual core premise IS interesting.

Kunsken: write another "Quantum" book and no more of these please.

Usually enjoy his work. This one was vv boring.

About 10-15% of this book is interesting. The rest just seems to drag on and on about various people's problems to the point where I stopped caring about them. You know when you have that friend who complains so much you stop being sympathetic? This felt like that.

Good premise, just could have been shorter by half.

    phenomenal

I thought, eh, this is okay for the first half of the book. A week later I'd listened to it twice and was looking at 3D maps of Venus, enraptured by this world in the clouds of sulphuric acid. well done. just damn, truly transporting and so well researched and constructed.

Amazing story full of Triumph and Turmoil

Künsken does an amazing job of building characters with incredible depth and breath in a beautiful science fiction universe. This is a story about family and personal discovery. The far future setting adds to the story with out distracting from it. I have recommended it to numerous people and will certainly read it again.

    Unsure if it's just me

I should have loved this, an inclusive hard sci-fi novel, with fascinating world-building, a diverse cast and a deep mystery at it's core. But I spent the first third obsessing at the narrator's distracting vocal tics, and the rest being irritated at the slow plot and lack of enjoyment in the story. Towards the end I forgot the fact the narrator sounded like she was trying to squeeze out a poop at the end of every sentence, and that her french was indecipherable. I started to respect her depth of feeling and commitment to the characters. But the story dragged, and nobody had a good time. Ever. The interesting plot points, the hook I was there for, just never had centre stage. Instead, I got the feeling the author had lost track of what readers want. Long descriptions of every journey through the clouds, never jumping to interesting action, plodding narrator by narrator advancing the plot step by step with no style surprises.

    SPOILER:

And then... The death of one of the more positive and interesting characters right before the end... It was such a downer. I don't understand why the author thought it would be a good thing to do. I would have stopped listening there except there was only 15 minutes left. I already had the sense the author didn't know why we were reading on and this just lost my investment completely.

So, maybe it was just me, but I found this dreary and boring. While the plot and action and character development could have gripped me deeply, it felt like the camera was always pointing at the wrong place...

    A fantastic book

I liked the entire book, but Pascal's and Marde's perspectives were especially interesting. Another excellent example of world building from Kunsken and a lively narration by Eyre

The tale of Venus was a dazzling and emotional.

Will have to spend some time on a detailed review of this, but for now, I'm a bit overwhelmed by the impact this scifi adventure of Venus, as referred to in The Quantum Magician and Quantum Garden. The universe Kunsken created has so much more to show us and reveal. I loved this.

    Really good, different

What a wonderful change from the normal SF (and I LIKE normal SF). Derek Künsten is becoming one of my favorite authors (check out his other books). Highly recommended.

    Unfinished

Family drama set against the deadly inhospitality of Venus. Starts bleak and interesting. Fails to carry the key plot forward. Too long-winded as a preamble for a sequel.

    Great

I'm not a native English speaker so it was a bit confusing and sometimes hard to understand everthing. But I really liked the story and I might listen to it again in the future.

I liked that every family member is unique and has their own story. The atmosphere and this sci-fi-scenario are super cool.

I loved Pascalle's journey. It taught me so much and helped me to understand how trans people feel and how hard it can be to find yourself and appreciate who you really are. I wish more books had characters like her.
