As a child Josephine Maxwell was attacked and left for dead. She learned the hard way that life is a constant struggle for survival. She can't waste time pining over a man she can't have. Now the killer has returned, and the only person who can save her is the FBI agent she deceived and betrayed six months ago.

Special Agent-in-Charge Marshall Hayes has made it his life's work to fight on the side of law and order, even though it cost him the only woman he ever loved. The return of a serial killer gives him the excuse he needs to force his way back into her life. But in order to catch the killer and safeguard Josie's life, he has to break all the rules and risk losing his heart again.

    Her Series Book Two

    Her Series Book Two

Josephine Maxwell didn't know that her childhood attacker had become a serial killer until she is attacked again. When Marshall Hayes tells her the FBI needs her help in tracking down the Blade Hunter, she is reluctant to reveal all of her secrets. However, she wants the monster off the streets as much as they do. She agrees to tell him what she knows, but he already has some idea since he has seen her scars. Being assigned a bodyguard and dragged around by Marsh is not what Josie had in mind. Marsh seems to have some connection to the killer, though, and he will not allow Josie to be hurt.

    Audio Review:
Eric G. Dove is a narrator I could listen to forever. He has a balance between storytelling and acting that allows the reader to get immersed in the story.

If you're looking for a suspenseful romance with a heroine willing to let the hero help her, to a point, this is the book for you!

*I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

    Great book and awesome narration..

The first reviewer on Amazon said, “Heroine is VERY unlikeable.” So, Josie was sliced all to hell by a serial killer when she was 9, then her mother disappeared at the same time, and was left with an alcoholic father, later in life she was chased by a deranged mob boss, and after that she had to cope with the guy who cut her up to begin with coming back after her. So, yeah, Josie was a little sarcastic and hateful and mean sometimes. I found it totally understandable for her to be that way. After all she went through I wouldn’t expect her to be Little Miss Sunshine.

I really liked the story about Josie and FBI agent Marsh in the first book so I was anxious to read this one. It was better than Her Sanctuary. Marsh was a fantastic hero; he cared deeply for Josie and would do anything to protect her.

The other players were great, too: Dancer, his BFF and another FBI agent. Vince a giant of a Navy Seal that Marsh hired to look after Josie when he couldn’t. Sam Walker, another FBI agent. Jacob and Beatrice, Marsh’s parents. And Brook and Pru, what a serious mess those two were. They were written perfectly.

There was a whole lot of murdering going on in this story but not too descriptive.

And there was explicit sex and the F-bomb was released 36 times.

As to the narration: Eric Dove is one of the best narrators out there. His voices and emotions are just awesome.

    Mostly Good

I thought the narrator was good. I liked seeing Joseohine and Marshall get their own story. Josephine was a little too insecure for my taste but her issues were understandable Considering her childhood and other past traumas. I did not guess the villain and so that was a nice twist. I am happy none of the good guys died . I could have done without the sex scenes. They did not add anything to the story.

Good mystery plot, not much character

The mysteries at the center of this plot were well done. The effects of trauma on the heroine were well scripted.

One thing bothered me - the descriptions of Vince. He seems like a good man, and he’s Black. That’s awesome; there should be more Black characters in novels in all genres, IMO. That said, I really don’t need to be reminded that his teeth are white against his dark skin tone over and over. He’s not the Cheshire Cat. I wish the author had found descriptions that were less minstrel-show-era stereotypes, and more about him as a character. If I thought the author could manage to see him as a whole person, I’d love an entire book about him.

Overall, I found there was just something missing. Why does the hero fall for the heroine? It’s never really explored, beyond physical appeal. Also, her character doesn’t really develop as the story progresses; it just changes abruptly.

    S*P*O*I*L*E*R ALERT!!!!

    SPOILERS BELOW!!

It was like that old belief that a 2nd knock on the head will cure amnesia. Except in this case, experiencing trauma as an adult just reversed the effects of childhood trauma. She just got over all of her ingrained responses and moved on.

I really didn’t buy the ending at all. That’s just not how healing works.

    Great listen

I have to say Toni is one very talent author that grabs you from the first page as she always throws in a twist and thrill. She gives you stories with today headlines with such passion, thrills, adventurer that sends chills through your body. Her Last Chance is a well written book that will stay with you long after you close the last page. This story has to send chills with just the thought there is a killer out there that does this to women. It makes you look twice before going down a dark alley or being alone by yourself on a dark road.

Josephine has a past that still give her nightmares to almost die at a killers hands and lose your mother the same night. Having a father that is abusive doesn’t leave you with many options. Taking one day at a time is about all you can deal with. Then to have the killer come back killing those you love and those you just meet would be just to much to deal with. How it must feel knowing he is coming for you!

Josephine is a very strong character she has to be to live through what she has. She is afraid but will stand her ground. This killer has taken to much away from her she won’t give him more. Josie is just a loving lady who still deals with her past feeling she isn’t good enough. Not letting people get to close. She touched my heart with her story, she reached in and grabbed it as I pictured in my mind what this killer did to her when she was a child.

Marshall has had his sites on Josie for awhile now with the killer back he now as a reason to get in touch with her. One night was not enough for him he finds she is the only women he wants. If he could just get through to her they could have a never ending love. I loved him as a character he is so strong, giving, he gives space even when he doesn’t want to.

The narrator does a wonderful job, his character voices are wonderful, you can really feel what the characters are going through. His female and male characters are wonderful, you always know who is talking and what they are feeling. There are no background noise, no volume changes and no repeating of words, it is a very clear audio that I really enjoyed. I am very disappointed with this narrator, he always brings me a delightful listen.

The author gives you such wonderful character along with supporting characters. They will steal your heart, make you laugh and give you shocks. All are strong, friendly and at times flirty. The author does keep her card close to her chest and keeps you guessing who the killer is. She puts in many twists that will have you with your mouth open. Toni is one of those authors when you see her name you know it is going to be an outstanding read. You know she has some thrills which will get your heart pumping and your mouth hung open. Toni is a wonderful author, her audios are out of this world. I never will forget the first one I listen to I keep looking behind me the whole way to work. If you have read or listen to one of her book you know why she is a bestselling author.

    Horrible Heroine

Josie is actually the worst. I’m not sure what Marsh sees in her...I struggled to find any redeeming qualities!

If you can get past that this book is okay. Not one of the author’s best by any means.

I really like this narrator! 10/10 would listen to another book narrated by him.

it's time to listen to a great book

I was gifted this audio ARC from the author for a honest and unbiased review
This is the 2nd book in the series. I suggest even tho this can be a stand alone it would help to read the first book. This book has so much going for it. It is sad and heartbreaking, but also thrilling and exciting.
I must admit that the suspense element Her Last Chance was top-notch. It kept me guessing, on pins and needles willing the killer to reveal his identity.
I must say that Toni is an author you should definitely look out for if you are a fan of the genre. Make time in your MR calendar for this one. Bravo Toni Anderson.
I Strongly recommend this book for fans of Toni Anderson. She weaves a very good mystery, her characters are believable and the book holds your interest until the end.
Eric G Dove did a good job with this book.

    A satisfying romantic suspense story

Eighteen years ago, at nine years old Josie Maxwell was the first victim of a man who became the serial killer now known as the Blade Hunter. Josie, unlike later victims, survived, but this wasn't the only event in her life that taught her it's a struggle for survival.

Six months ago, Josie nearly died at the hands of another killer, and drugged and betrayed FBI Special Agent in Charge Marshall Hayes to protect the hiding place of her friend.

Now the Blade Hunter is back, and he's found Josie again. This time, he's determined to finish the job he started eighteen years ago. The only person who's going to put the pieces together fast enough is Marshall Hayes, the man she betrayed.

I like the fact that both Josie and Marsh are portrayed as strong, smart, and determined. They each have real weaknesses and make real screw-ups. They each find vital pieces of the puzzle.

And they each struggle with some painful personal history and complicated personal relationships.

It's a good, fast-paced story that doesn't treat either the reader (or listener) or any of the characters like idiots.

    Recommended.

I may have received this as a review copy. I'm reviewing it voluntarily.
