Dana just needs the money. Overnight shifts monitoring an elderly woman through a home security app—watch, log, flag anything unusual. Simple. Except Ruth appears in two rooms at once. Except there are messages in the chat log that Dana never sent, in her own words, about things she never saw. Except the empty den at the edge of the camera grid has started to feel less empty every night she watches it.
The family says it's nothing. The last two sitters said the same things Dana is saying now—and then they left. Dana doesn't want to be the one who flagged too much. So she stops flagging. She just keeps watching.
By the time she understands what she's actually been hired to do, she's no longer sure which side of the camera she's on.
Hearthfire is a standalone psychological horror short story about isolation, surveillance, and the quiet cost of looking away—a single unsettling sitting, perfect for listeners who like their horror slow, internal, and hard to shake.
