Description

The second thrilling installment of the award-winning Nevernight Chronicle, from New York Times best-selling author Jay Kristoff.

In a land where three suns almost never set, a ruthless assassin continues her quest for vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family.

Mia Corvere has found her place among the Blades of Our Lady of Blessed Murder, but many in the Red Church hierarchy think she's far from earned it. Plying her bloody trade in a backwater of the Republic, she's no closer to ending the men who destroyed her familia; in fact she's told directly that Consul Scaeva is off limits. But after a deadly confrontation with an old enemy, Mia's suspicions about the Red Church's true motives begin to grow.

When it's announced that Scaeva will be making a rare public appearance at the conclusion of the grand games in Godsgrave, Mia defies the Church and sells herself to a gladiatorial collegium for a chance to finally end him. Upon the sands of the arena, Mia finds new allies, bitter rivals, and more questions about her strange affinity for the shadows. But as conspiracies unfold within the collegium walls and the body count rises, Mia will be forced to choose between love and revenge and uncover a secret that could change the very face of her world.

Conflicts With Book 1

I picked up the first one because the premise and setting sounded quite interesting. Italy instead of England. City in the body of a God.I enjoyed the first book with some gripes. But the story that takes place in this second book makes the first almost meaningless. It felt like the author had two separate story ideas and tried to shoehorn the same character into both and force it to be contiguous. If you changed all the character names in this the story would function far better. Vague spoiler; the end goal the character has in this book could have been completed in chapter one. The author just ignored the main characters gifts. The narrator is a nice match for the tone of the dialogue and does a good job.

Holy Moly, buckle up Dorothy ...

Any additional comments?

As other reviewers have pointed out, the second book syndrome strikes in many trilogies. Not so for Godsgrave. New characters, new locations, new intrigues, new bad guys ... oh, wait, bad guys are now good guys? Lots of fun snark between Mr. Kindly and Eclipse. And holy moly, the head spinning twists will leave you wondering what you just read (heard). Mr. Kristoff left me breathless at the end. I want Book 3, now!

2nd rate Assassin

The first book was ok with Mia being an uneducated and undisciplined student, even though she was supposedly trained and prepared to enter the red church......, I find that the Assassins Guild seems to be Second rate with all of the good assassins retired to teach the craft. Now I finish the second book and it is clear that Mia is still uneducated and still undisciplined in her supposed craft. She is not at all a good assassin, the only edge she has over any of her peers is her darkening power, and even then she is barely able to keep up with the true students. Only by the authors decree is she worth anything. She takes no advice, does not listen to her passengers advice and seems simply childish, I know that in the book she is a young girl and may be naive and childish but she has had many personal losses and has shed much blood on her quest that should make her more mature but the author chooses instead to give this character the personality of a spoiled American girl brat that can’t comprehend simple logic. And maybe I missed the point of this second book but what the hell was the purpose with this hole Spartacus story line thing going on why not just jump out of the shadows and kill your targets instead of these long drawn out nonsense story. Annoying read, I found myself hating the main character.... moving on lol

Hope the main character dies in a horrible way...

A bloody affair.... I was all for the main character. After this book.... I hope she dies the most miserable death possible. Agony upon agony please. She needs to die a horrible death. Also, a good book.

Can’t wait for the next in the series

A great blend of suspense, action and a little steamy sex. The action scenes are pretty graphic. I enjoy it, as I think cringing at some of the scenes adds to the experience of the book. I also like that the main characters are not one dimensional. The protagonists have their character flaws and even a few of the villains have their redeeming qualities.

🙌🏼👌🏼

Surprisingly good series so far. The narrator bugged me for a bit in the first book of the series but much better this time around. Great plot twists!

1st Book was great! Let's just leave off there.

So as a note i particularly did not like this book, but before I get into that I want to say that the narrator Holder Graham gave a spectacular performance. His voice and the speed and tone of his reading carried the same emotional weight that the author wanted us to feel and I really appreciated him giving his all to this book.

The book starts out quite boring, almost immediately jumping into a sex scene to try to thrust life into its otherwise stale pages. Unlike the first book though, our sex scene has no meaning. Two masters of manipulation aren't slowly learning to trust each other and dropping their guard around each other to become adorably intimate, instead we just get mindless sexual gratification. I suppose we sort of set up the basis for our Protagonist's bisexuality, but its just a bunch of garbage writing covered up by sensuality.
This leads into our romance, which is alright. Love interest drops a big ol' truth bomb on our protagonist and the story begins about 1/3 of the way into the book. Protagonist decides to go deep undercover and be the best assassin of all time, and that story arc is actually quite good. We get two competing themes centered around how much you're willing to sacrifice for vengeance - the gladiator storyline suggesting that nothing should be sacrificed and our romantic scenes showing a more Machiavellian mindset. The main character does get to have a bit of an internal struggle about this, but its mostly a flimsy excuse for drama with no depth. Ultimately we, the audience get faked out all the while the protagonist accomplishes everything she wants! OR DOES SHE?!

So as to the fakeout - its just bad writing to set up two mutually exclusive ideologies with exclusive goals and then accomplish both because the author couldnt commit to the sinister tones he laid out for the entire book. Shame on you Jay Kristoff.
As to the "OR DOES SHE?!" - The ending will make you cringe. Neatly tied up plot threads? No thanks, how about we unravel previously tied up ones just to throw you off! How about a villain that apparently has unrealistic timelord levels of foresight and planning despite a plethora of unforeseeable twists in our story. Instead of a gritty hard fought victory, we the audience get duped and then treated to a plate full of cringey plot contrivances that become the cliff-hanger for our next book.

I for one will not be reading the next book, out of principle if not anything else.

Fantastic! Twists, turns, darkness all around

You won't be disappointed by this book if you're ok with a bit of intrigue mixed with the blood and shadows. Definitely start with the first book.

Solid middle part

Storywise this is a very solid middle part that makes you hungry for part three. I'm enjoying the way the book is performed.
