Description

The epic conclusion to the internationally best-selling Nevernight Chronicle series from New York Times best-selling author Jay Kristoff.

The greatest games in Godsgrave’s history have ended with the most audacious murders in the history of the Itreyan Republic. Mia Corvere, gladiatii and escaped slave and infamous assassin, is on the run. Pursued by Blades of the Red Church and soldiers of the Luminatii legion, she may never escape the City of Bridges and Bones alive. Her mentor Mercurio is now in the clutches of her enemies. Her own family wishes her dead. And her nemesis, Consul Julius Scaeva, stands but a breath from total dominance over the Republic.

But beneath the city, a dark secret awaits. Together with her lover Ashlinn, brother Jonnen, and a mysterious benefactor returned from beyond the veil of death, she must undertake a perilous journey across the Republic, seeking the final answer to the riddle of her life. Truedark approaches. Night is falling on the Republic for perhaps the final time. Can Mia survive in a world where even daylight must die?

New York Times and internationally best-selling author Jay Kristoff’s writing has been praised by critics and fans alike and has won many awards, including four Aurealis Awards, an ABIA, and David Gemmell Morningstar and Legend awards.

Great Read but had issues

In the final installment, the story lived up to it's theme. There were plenty of twists, turns, heroics, and fighting. I did not like all of the scenes/ending but that was because I favored one character over another and they got screwed. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth for Mia. I couldn't understand her actions. Still don't. This was still a good read or listen really since I AudioBooked it. The AB had issues- very apparent voice-overs, repeated passages, and towards the end some of the voices were different. Overall however, I feel like Holter Graham did a great job. His delivery of the story really got me into it!

Kinda disappointed

I feel like the story is a step down from the second book. The ending as huge of a scale it was is underwhelming and felt like an episode of dragon ball z or something similar. The constant 4th wall breaking about the foot notes was annoying. You can tell the author was really mad about people not liking the foot notes in the previous books. At one point he literally says "if you don't like the foot notes f#@k you. How about you write a book since you're an expert of literature". I didn't mind the foot notes at all till he kept pointing them out for a joke that got old the first time. Speaking of humor,I didn't find myself laughing like I did with previous books. None of the jokes were hitting.

I had a hard time enjoying most of the cast with the exception of a few(cloud was great). Ashlyn turn from a fun, independent, smart mouth assassin to a petty love sick puppy. Her whole character now is being Mia's girlfriend and never being anything else. A complete downgrade, which sucks since she was my favorite in the first two books. The sex scenes also overstay their welcome. Don't want to get into huge spoilers, but I do admit near the start of the book there are some great twist and turns with decent character development at the halfway point with some hyped action scenes sprinkled throughout. Overall Darkdawn is a disappointment especially by being the last book in the series. Audio book wise, the reader did a nice performance. His male voices were limited and there were a couple of times were he changed a character voice for a chapter or mix them up,but not bad.

Whisper narration annoying

The story was good the normal narration was good. The whispering characters were so annoying it made my teeth itch. The producer gets negative stars for that choice. The narrator I’m sure did what he was instructed to do. REALLY REALLY BAD TECHNIQUE especially for long sections of narration!!!!

Pretty good ending to a great series. (No spoilers)

What can I say… Book 2 was so good it set an almost impossible bar. This was a good solid ending to a great series. Though I confess to being a little disappointed with the predictable, somewhat anticlimactic ending, it was nevertheless a satisfying end that answered most of your questions.

Darkdawn was probably on par with Nevernight, which was a great book. Godsgrave was just such a masterful nail-biter cliffhanger, whereas Darkdawn lost a bit of steam by the end of it.

Go into it with slightly lower expectations and you will probably love it. Expect it to top Godsgrave, and you might be disappointed.

That being said, if you liked the first two books you’d have to be an idiot not to read the third. Well worth the time – Just the ending was a bit blah. I confess I stayed up half the night listening to the end of Godsgrave, and I fell asleep thirty minutes before the end of this book.

If you liked this series I highly recommend The Res Sister by Mark Lawrence. Everything he’s written has been superb, but the parallels between the ancestor trilogy and nevernight are crazy. Equally enjoyable series, though I find Lawrence’s writing style to be far superior.

Narrator did better

There were two very long conversations I can recall that I missed because the narrator still whispered too quietly for me to understand the shadows. Happened way less compared to the first and second book, so that's something.
No leaps in logic this time! Awesome!
Great ending. Would like more from this world, but it ended with a nice bow on top. Idk if unwrapping that bow would be a good idea or not, but we always want more of a great thing.

Dizzying. Daring. Distinct.

I will remember this story every time I look up at the moon. There’s nothing more lasting an author accomplish than that.

⚖️ Plot: As with many trilogies that weave on top of a deeper thread that holds all the books together, it requires the hero to be really invested in the bigger quest. That’s the only place where the book is a little lacking for me. Although it ends up being much grander in consequence to our world than Mia’s initial personal vendetta, I still feel Kristoff didn’t give her a good enough reason to change her goal.

🗺 World: Other than that, the setting and the system of magic was sensational. The action, the emotions, the mythology were all so unique and distinct that this story truly left its mark on me.

💑 Characters: Being the ultimate book in the series, we have been given satiating endings for all our beloved characters. Some had to leave us, and others clawed their way back to us, and still others found new purpose. Kristoff’s wit is truly second to none and through this work he’s converted me into a fan, forever and ever.

Disappointing end to a great series

ultimately a let down. The final was jumbled and confusing to ultimately give you a cheap "happily ever after. "

Good but padded for length

Although I loved the first two, I had a hard time getting through this one. The story is good and I found the ending more satisfying than most melodrama fantasies. But the my problem was that there were too many pages and not enough story. I got the feeling Kirstoff wrote this book and found it was about half the length of the other two, and his editor made him go back and pad it out so readers wouldn't feel short-changed.

Many chapters are nothing but internal monologues. It's fine to check in with what a character is feeling from time to time, but when the bulk of the novel is nothing but character self pity, it gets painful.

And though I won't spoil it, I must say kudos to Jay Kristoff for successfully ripping off "Space Balls" for a major plot point.

Holter Graham does a good job at narration, but I had to skip back and crank up the volume to decipher his whispering.

Worth it my gentle friends!

The ending was incredible. The end I will not give away.
Please listen and enjoy...

P.S.
Mia should have dropped Ash like a bad habit when Tric returns. Tric was a fabulous character and I was sad to see him go in Book 1 and Book 3 made my heart ache. Mia loved Ash and Tric but she had to choose.
I do not like Ash..I had to add that in again.
