    Description

“A moving tale of female solidarity and courage.” (Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Alice Network)

December 1917. As World War I rages in Europe, twenty-four-year-old Ruby Wagner, the jewel in a prominent Philadelphia family, prepares for her upcoming wedding to a society scion. Like her life so far, it’s all been carefully arranged. But when her beloved older brother is killed in combat, Ruby follows her heart and answers the Army Signal Corps’ call for women operators to help overseas.

As one of the trailblazing “Hello Girls” deployed to war-torn France, Ruby must find her place in the military strata, fight for authority and respect among the Allied soldiers, and work to secure a victory for the cause. But balancing service to country is complicated further by a burgeoning relationship with army medic Andrew Carrigan.

What begins as a friendship forged on the front lines soon blossoms into something more, forcing Ruby to choose between the conventions of a well-ordered life back home, and the risk of an unknown future.

    Incredible story and narration!

I highly recommend the audiobook! The narrator was exceptional with both French and American accents. Even a singing part!
The story of these women serving in World War I as telephone operators is amazing and the end had me crying for all they lost and won. As a retired Navy woman, knowing these kinds of women went before me is inspiring and makes me feel even more patriotic. I am grateful for the hope this story enlists both in our past and in our future.

    Hello Girls

Until recently I had not heard of the hello girls of WW1 and found this novel very interesting. I also didn't know of The influence these young women had on the women's suffrage movement The injustice of not recognizing the hello girls as part of the Army is inexplicable and unfortunately took too long to rectify. Telling their story is long overdue and Aimee Runyan told it skillfully

    Narration detracted from the story

Though largely predictable, the storyline of Girls on the Line is good and the characters are developed pretty well (though a little explanation of how Ruby overnight went from demure socialite to skilled leader would have helped). But my God, the narration was horrible. I had to speed it up to get through ... the ... awkward pauses ... that so clearly showed ... the narrator was incapable ... of reading a sentence that extended past the end of a line. Unbelievable and, after awhile, unbearable.

    Horrible Reader

I read the reviews and was excited to listen to this book but I have to wonder if these reviewers actually listened to the same book that I have been trying to listen to. The reader sounds like a robot. The sentences run on in some areas, the words are often choppy with misplaced accents and punctuation. It’s like having Siri reading to me. Horrible. I’m deleting this one.

    Great WW1 Book!

I loved the story and writing. I learned so much about this war that is never studied before as the 2nd war is the I've I've always been more interested in. It's opened a dialog with my husband and we are exploring more from WW1.

The narrator's voice was rather choppy, but it didn't take away from the story too much.

    Loved it

The narrator is amazing with the French accents and French words. It was interesting to hear how the author developed her story from letters and journals of the amazing ladies. Make sure to listen to the afterword.

    Annoying narrator

The story was sweet. Lovely topic - I never knew the armed forces had switchboard operators let alone females ones at that, so also educational. However, I nearly gave up several times within the first hour due to the narrators grating way of speaking. If you can get into the “meat” of the book it’s worth enduring the narrator’s voice.

    Audio

TERRIBLE AND HORRIBLE. Audio is horrible. it is not an uplifting book, yet the reader sounds like she is only on a happy journey, even when family is notified of solder's death. Why was she chosen? i could not tell if this is why I thought the book was awful too.

So good … I read the book in one day!

What at incredible and thoroughly engaging story … from the very first page I was drawn in by the story and its characters. The author brings to life the 'boots on the ground' experiences of war time that traditional history books lack. Though fiction, I continue to learn from these historical novels and am humbled by the accomplishments of these women in spite of their limbo status between the Victorian age and a more progressive treatment of women. The author's notes provide additional historical insights as well as the sources of inspiration for the book.
