Oh boy, I used to love the anime as a young teen, but it didn’t age as well as I hoped. Still very enjoyable if you manage to ignore the implications of the masculine characters’ actions and the casual sexism and heteronormative stereotypes. The performances are top notch, however, and make it much easier to swallow, especially considering how purple the prose is at time and amateurish the writing is. A classic case of great idea, good story, mediocre execution. I’ll be listening to the following books out of pure doggedness (and because I love the voice cast’s performances) and I hope that I won’t have to look into the distance with dead eyes as much as I did for this one.
