    Description

    Nottinghamshire, 1785

Julia Cummings has long been acquainted with loss - her mother, her brother, her sister, her friend, all gone too soon. But the loss that pushed her grief to the limit as a young girl was that of her best friend, Lucas Jonquil, who abandoned her without looking back. Now, eight years later, Lucas has returned to Lampton Park, and Julia has steeled herself - she will never forgive the man who broke her heart.

After losing too many of his friends and family to early deaths, Lucas vowed to live life to the fullest. And after traversing the world, he has returned from his adventures to find his family and home as he left them - except for Julia. The little girl he left behind has blossomed into a captivating lady, a lady who makes it clear she despises him. With little hope of reconciliation, the former friends are blindsided when their parents make a shocking announcement.

Lucas and Julia have been betrothed without their knowledge and are to marry immediately. Now Lucas must rely on the help of his closest friends to win the heart of a lady who loathes him - a lady he’s coming to love more deeply every day.

    Disappointing

Poor quality story. Sappy and insipid characters. I usually like this author’s stories but this one was very disappointing. Would not recommend.

    Torture

I am normally very easy to please but this book was torture. The narrator was awful and made the characters sound... well, like an old lady trying to sound like younger people. Once I finally got past the annoyance of that I just couldn’t get over the selfish Julia who constantly reminded herself of all Lucas’s transgressions and Lucas really was a “dunderhead”. It was not really believable at times and I kept thinking surely it will get better soon. The last 20 minutes they finally decided to care and think about each other. Not worth it. Argh. It was straight up torture.

I gave up with 45 minutes left

I never give up on books. I made it through almost 9 hours before I just couldn’t take it anymore. I was so bored and irritated with the main characters. There is zero chemistry (they are like brother and sister). Julia was whiny and passive aggressive. Lucas was also irritating. Nothing says “romantic male lead” like a bumbling, immature, adult married man whose life revolves around hanging out with his high school buddies. He needs his bro pack to come in and save his marriage? Ick. The Gents come across as caricatures and are obviously a way to set up the book series as each Gent will find his true love and be helped by his buddies to make it work. I’m sorry. I just hated it. When 21 year old Julia suggested playing hide and seek (HIDE AND SEEK!!!) with the 30(ish) year old Gents and they all enthusiastically agreed, I just ... ugh! Could they be less manly? The narrator did an ok job with the male voice but her “Julia” voice sounded like Luna Lovegood. It sounded spacey and vacant which just added to my feelings of irritation toward Julia as a character. I’ve read some other Sarah Edens and enjoyed them but this was a no. Please save yourself the time and the credit.

My New Favorite by Sarah M. Eden

I'm not usually fond of prequels, but this book has quite stolen my heart.

    Another Great Book

After reading about Lucas and Julia's boys I have loved reading about their story. I loved learning about their story and meeting the Gents. I can't wait to read more about them!

It was better than I thought it would be

I could relate to Julia. If I hadn't myself been forgotten and often left behind, I may have thought the author was exagerating Lucas' total self absorbance. I thought it was wonderful that he had such a good group of friends (The Gents) who could help both him AND Julia through the hardships of their marriage, and only wish that everyone in such a predicament had a group of understanding and helpful friends like them. My reasoning about Lucas being so entirely obtuse about how he treated Julia, (even though he tried to be kind) was that it was a masculine trait to be self-concerned - but then when I saw how the Gents were so observant of both Lucas and Julia, and not so self-concerned, it gave me great hope. I think Julia was so courageous! Even though she was hurt again and again, she seemed to forgive Lucas fairly easily. I was so glad that he finally saw his unconcern towards Julia, and rectified it.

    Very sweet!

Very sweet story! I loved all the Gents! The story lagged a little towards the end but ended well all the same.

    Amazing!!!

I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to into a book of characters that went back a generation but I was so pleasantly surprised and am really looking forward to the others in this series. What a fantastic and lovable group of Gentlemen. ❤️
