Description

New York Times best seller

The amazing true story of a man and a little dog who formed an unbreakable bond in the middle of the Gobi desert — that changed both of their lives forever.

Finding Gobi is the miraculous tale of Dion Leonard, a seasoned ultramarathon runner who crosses paths with a stray dog while competing in a 155-mile race through the Gobi Desert in China. The lovable pup, who would later earn the name Gobi, proved that what she lacked in size, she more than made up for in heart, as she went step for step with Dion over the Tian Shan Mountains and across massive sand dunes, keeping pace with him for 77 miles.

As Dion witnessed the incredible determination and heart of this small animal, he found his own heart undergoing a change as well. Whereas in the past these races were all about winning and being the best, his goal now was to make sure his and Gobi's friendship continued well after the finish line.

However, before he could take her home, Gobi went missing in the sprawling Chinese city where she was being kept. Dion, with the help of strangers and a viral outpouring of assistance on the internet, set out to track her down, and reunite with the dog that changed his life.

Listen to this inspiring story and discover how miracles truly are possible — and find your own heart changing as well.

What an amazing story!

This book was such a blast to listen to and I highly recommend it. If you don't know about Gobi, she's a stray dog that started following an ultramarathoner named Deon in the second day of an ultramarathon in China. If I remember my numbers, Gobi completed 77 miles of the race at Deon's side! During that time a bond was formed and Deon promised Gobi that he'd figure out how to get her home to Edinburgh. This book is about the race, Deon's life, Gobi's dramatic and heartbreaking post-race disappearance, and Deon's fight to get Gobi home.

I learned about Deon and Gobi when this story first started going viral; I've supported them every since and have followed them on various social media platforms. I love hearing about Gobi and figured this book would contain little new information (to me)...I was wrong. This book has a lot of new content, so if you're new to Gobi or already a superfan, you'll enjoy this book! If you love reading animal stories, you'll love this book. If you want to read about competitive sports, you'll love this book. If you enjoy biographies, you'll enjoy this book. Bottom line: check out this book.

Simon Bubb does a fantastic job narrating. His Australian accent is enjoyable and easy for this American listener to understand.

TOO LONG FOR SIMPLE STORY

Good narrator. Australian accent. Way too long, though. This could have spared the listener at least 2 hours in completing the tale.

Inspiring Little Dog

The story about Gobi is wonderful and I am glad it all worked out for them. Gobi must be an incredible dog and Dion is amazing for what he did for Gobi but also for what he did for Tommy Chin. I very much enjoyed the stories about the races, almost as much as the stories about Gobi. Great story.

Thrilled to find it as an audiobook

I followed this story all last year through the highs and lows. Loved both Dion and Gobi's determination. Because I so rarely get to read actual books, I was afraid I would miss the full behind the scenes stuff when this came out. Thank heavens you had the foresight to also do the audiobook! I've recommended it to all my friends as well. Very well done.

An Australian ultrarunner and an ultrarunning dog

Where does Finding Gobi rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a story about an Australian ultrarunner and a stray ultrarunning dog, a 250 mile ultra-race across the Gobi Desert in China, the Australian's Dutch wife back home in Scotland, devoted strangers in China who became devoted friends, and the good that can come from a viral story on the internet. Whether you've been following Gobi's story since the beginning, or you've never heard about Gobi before, you will LOVE the book! It's appeal is far broader that just for people who love dogs. It is also a story about ultra racing. It is a story about how the internet and crowd funding can make really good things happen.

Amazing Story

This is a true story written by an ultra-marathoner. During a 155-mile race through the Gobi Desert in China, a small dog began to follow him. A mutual bond was formed and Dion vowed to rescue the stray and bring him home with him to the U.K. Easier said than done, and I will not provide any spoilers, but I highly, HIGHLY recommend reading it. Aside from the amazing story itself, I was very impressed with the actual writing of this book. It's one thing to be an accomplished ultra runner, another thing to have a dog choose you and join you on an ultra marathon, but to have the skill and gift to be able to put the entire event in writing to share with the world...this I find truly amazing. I've been a runner for almost 25 years (not an ultra runner, just a traipsing around the block, local 5K type runner) and I felt Mr. Leonard really captured the thought process and emotional process of running very well. I've even had stray dogs join me on several of my runs down rural country roads. Even for just a short distance, a special little bond is formed. The longest a stray stayed with me was seven miles. After the run, I didn't know what to do. Animal control won't pick up strays in rural areas. I had two dogs at home that wouldn't have taken kindly to him. Ultimately, I put him in my car, drove him back to where he started running with me, and then let him out. In retrospect, anyone who saw me do that probably thought I was dumping him! My point being, I guess, is that I understand that bond, and I so admire him for committing to Gobi and for following through. You do not have to be a runner to enjoy this book. If you find yourself put off with the running part, just hang in there. The story picks up when Gobi enters the scene. It's an amazing story and a great example of how dogs really do choose us, and they love us in spite of all of our short comings. They make us better people.
