Description

Unlikely allies uniting across the world. Blood feuds that span centuries. A single chance at life.

The world watches the sky with trepidation. The insanity of Xenocide knew no bounds, and all will soon suffer the effects he had planned for a millennium. Though none know what is to come, they all know it isn't going to be easy to survive.

The Master has a plan, one that can give the world at large a way to escape the onrushing desolation. It may be on the bleeding edge of morality and what he needs might prove too difficult to secure, but the Master asks for trust.

Cal and Dale both have their role to play as the world hurtles toward destruction. One needs to bring the races of the world together while the other simply needs to survive. Surrounded by supposed allies, the duo will do all that they can to succeed - but with every new arrival comes rising tensions and faltering trust.

The apocalypse is coming. Will honor or greed stand the test of time?

Change of narrator is very disturbing

Changing from Vikas Adams to Luke Daniels is very jarring. Characters who once sounded convincingly female now sound like whiskey-drinking obese grandfathers. Rose became a 50 year old Scottish man who loves smokey single malts, at least from the voice. Dani is an old sailor recovering from a bout of tuberculosis. Cal is suddenly a kibbitzing Northeasterner with a heavy, if slightly hard to place, accent. That said, the story is still a lot of fun. And, after a book or so maybe I'll adapt to these new voices. I sure do miss Vikas Adams' narrations of these characters though.

ugh, narrator

I enjoyed Luke Daniels reading Rexxus, it was different, but felt like a valid interpretation of the characters. Here, he completely ignored everything Vikas Adams did and gave all character voices new quirks. I got really tired of Cal sounding like an impression of Peter Griffin, and various other characters gaining random accents. It was difficult to get into the story because of this.

Great story; but I've been spoiled by Vikas Adam

Enjoyed the book. A *little* predictable (which is why I dislike prequels so much) if you've read the previous books in the series as well as the Completionist Chronicles to this point. But it still made me laugh and smile and I still enjoyed the ride (something I can rarely say about prequels in general).

<spoiler level="minor">
Also re-started the Ritualist and loved the name of the "game" the "Certified Altruistic Lexicon" was in charge of. *That* made me laugh for a solid minute.
</spoiler>

As an Audible listener I was disappointed in the performance. I hate to be critical as I doubt I could do any better and I *know* I've been spoiled by Vikas Adam. But the reader for this one only had one true "female" voice (and it was just wrong for Rose; and wasn't even used for Dani...not that it would work for her either) and kept using the wrong voice for the wrong character (the number of times Cal's voice was used for Dani was especially frustrating as they were talking to one another).

Rant over. Just wanted to get it off my chest.

Needs old narrator.

Almost felt like a different story. Wasn't happy with so many people sounding like red necks.

Same issue every other reviewer has

Please Audible. Can you consider making it a principle to not change a narrator with a long series. It feels like the characters have gone through extreme personality changes. I didn't check before buying for a narrator assuming it is business as usual. Luke seems like he is overacting the roles maybe it is just because the other guy was more low key and calm.

Went though this experience with Got and also suffered. Like imagine you wake up one day and your two best friends switched voices

change in narrator nearly killed all characters.

It is sad to follow a book series this deep and have the narrator changed out.

Great story, but.....

Ok, so the story itself is great. I understand that the author had no option about changing the narrator, but wow, it really ruined the adventure for me. I felt like I was starting a new book series. Vikas Adams did a wonderful job with the voice acting in the previous books. Luke Daniels, while a good narrator, makes me have to repeat sections of dialogue, as all of the characters (especially the female characters) have varying degrees of the same male voice, with southern and french accents. I haven't even yet finished the book, but I really hope it is the last one so that I can move on with my wounded heart.

Edit: After finishing the book, I am glad that the series is over. I've loved this series, and I really got to love the characters, but the voice change up, even with the lore as to why, just too negatively changed the beat of the story. Hans is by far one of my favorite characters, and I feel like he was completely replaced. Luke Daniels is really great in the Ascend Online series, but here, it just didn't measure up to the bar Vikas set. Thanks Dakota, I still can't wait for the next Completionist book to release next month!

It's good, but read it yourself.

Do you remember the 90's, and saturday morning cartoons, where 4kids would just take anime and plaster random dubs over a show, totally changing the tone and feel of a series just to make a profit? Well, that's what this book is like.

Luke Daniels is a narrator I've enjoyed before, but his voices just don't work for this series. The tone genuinely sounds like a saturday morning cartoon at times, with his voices sometimes being far too exaggerated, especially when compared to the voices done by Vikas Adams. Speaking of voice comparisons, Daniels' voices sound nothing like the ones performed by Adams. We're on the 5th book of a series, so such a dramatic change in how characters sound is very jarring and confusing. If he was at least trying to sound similar to Vikas' voices I could accept it, but he gives characters radically different voices, and sometimes different accents, and as a result it's hard to immerse myself in the series, since I'm constantly confused on who is talking, and constantly comparing his voices to the voices I'm expecting.

I feel bad going so hard against Daniels, but I just didn't enjoy his version of these characters at all and genuinely wish I'd just read the book myself. The story itself is great, and exactly what I expected from the series, but the narration change seriously hurts my enjoyment of this series.

All female Voices sound like grumpy old man voice

Love the series. Love previous Narrator but they switched Narrator and well.... its a good story but you have to suffer through horrible voices on some of the characters. Don't get me wrong you can still enjoy the story but many times when the narrator switches voices I have to concentrate on who is supposed to be talking because the voice just does not fit the character. If you loved the previous books you will get this one and its worth the credit. I just hope Dakota goes back to Vikas Adam as Narrator.

Vikas Adam was better.

Let me start by saying I like the narrator Luke Daniels, but Vikas Adam was better. Also not sure why they felt the need to switch narrators so far into a book series, Vikas also had more distinct voices which made it easier to follow. A disappointing change for this fan of Dakota Kraut.

Well...

... the narrator in this book changed from Vikas Adams to Luke Daniels and I must admit that this was a terrible change.
As much as I love listening to Luke Daniels in The Iron Druid Chronicles I really missee Vikas Voice here.
Vikas gave the characters a way betzer distinction and speech pattern fitting to them while Lukes versions seemed kinda bland. I loved the conversations from Cal when spoken by Vikas and his way of making every talk between Dani and Cal a great fun to listen to. I somehow missed Cals funny side completly under Lukes narrating.

About the story... its weaker then the first 3 books but still fun to read. I just suggest to get the ebook for part 5 instead of the audiobook as witch parts 1-4.

IMPOSSIBLE!

What a shame. I loved this.
But changeing the speaker on the last volume.

Damm you. Dakota.

I refunded all of them. It ruined the story completly for me. I can't listen to neither one now in a relaxed manner.

Why the hex did you change the speaker?! Money issues? Did vik die?! Seriously, Fans boycott this ... from one of the best possible voice actors for this series. To someone that sounds cheesy 24/7 of the time. Yes Luke Daniels is a good voice actor too, but he's not a "Carl" or "Dave" or "Bob". He just doesn't fit with those characters.

Give us the old speaker back ... a version 2.0 ... a remake ... whatever. But just a big fat no to this ... i can't listen to it.

Mistakes were made

I really go enjoy this series. The characters have a unique feeling to them and each one with different intents and wishes. The story is well written and I simply adore the genre of expanding, influence and power building structures such as dungeons or even people or groups.

The only negative is the change in narrator. I have not heard any books with this speaker before and i cannot say that he is a good fit for this genre. Where the first one used different intonations and accents to underline the different people. The new one simply reads his lines. It is at times hard to figure out who is talking to whom and the overall immersion for the characters, which was build from the first book on just crumbles, if there is no effort on the side of the speaker. Especially, if a southern (I have to imagine it is southern, I am not native to the USA) accent is chosen for a world which is not very heavy on american accents. It simply felt wrong and killed all joy I had for the book at the time.

I do hope there will be a next one as I am at the point of this review not done listening to it. And I hope the first narrator will pick this book up again in the future.

the narator change was a BAD IDEA

Luke Daniels can't hold a candel to Vikas Adam.
Where Vikas modulates his voice (higher and deeper pitch) Luke bearly does that and relys on accents.
Which results in EVERYONE sounding the same. Dale sounds like Call, Dani sounds like Call,Tom sounds like gruff Call ... you get the picture.

Skipp the audiobook and read volume 5 the story is as amzing as the previous ones but Luke Daniels ruins the experince.

Sadly the narrator changed

Good end to the story but narrator fell off a LOT compared to the old one. Having a different narrator is bad enough but the new one also was pretty... mediocre. Especially compared to Adams

New narrator, different feeling

The story is great and I loved every second!

Luke Daniels as the new narrator is a bit of a mixed bag, all the characters you know and love seem to have been randomised and got new accents and personalities. I would have loved to see Vikas Adams return, but oh well.
Luke Daniels is an amazing narrator and did a great job of giving this book life.
