Description

Michael Crichton, the New York Times best-selling author of Jurassic Park, returns to the world of paleontology in this recently discovered novel - a thrilling adventure set in the Wild West during the golden age of fossil hunting.

The year is 1876. Warring Indian tribes still populate America's western territories, even as lawless gold-rush towns begin to mark the landscape. In much of the country, it is still illegal to espouse evolution. Against this backdrop two monomaniacal paleontologists pillage the Wild West, hunting for dinosaur fossils while surveilling, deceiving, and sabotaging each other in a rivalry that will come to be known as the Bone Wars.

Into this treacherous territory plunges the arrogant and entitled William Johnson, a Yale student with more privilege than sense. Determined to survive a summer in the west to win a bet against his archrival, William has joined world-renowned paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh on his latest expedition. But when the paranoid and secretive Marsh becomes convinced that William is spying for his nemesis, Edwin Drinker Cope, he abandons him in Cheyenne, Wyoming, a locus of crime and vice. William is forced to join forces with Cope and soon stumbles upon a discovery of historic proportions. With this extraordinary treasure, however, comes exceptional danger, and William's newfound resilience will be tested in his struggle to protect his cache, which pits him against some of the West's most notorious characters.

Drawing on both meticulously researched history and an exuberant imagination, Dragon Teeth is based on the rivalry between real-life paleontologists Cope and Marsh; in William Johnson listeners will find an inspiring hero only Michael Crichton could have imagined. Perfectly paced and brilliantly plotted, this enormously winning adventure is destined to become another Crichton classic.

Critiques

"Scott Brick is a narrator at the top of his game, and this is a meaty tale for him to get his - well, teeth - into....A compelling listen - and one that will leave the listener feeling pleasantly educated as well as entertained." ( AudioFile)

Good book but technical issues

Would you listen to Dragon Teeth again? Why?

Not this copy - it may have been a problem with the download, but this is the first time I've listened to an audible book with a lot of gaps in the audio. I heard most and enough to follow the story, and even with the audio gaps it was a fun, interesting story (against a true background).

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dragon Teeth?

Cannot say - it was just a good story overall.

What about Scott Brick and Sherri Crichton ’s performance did you like?

I think Scott Brick is always great.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No - it's not that kind of book. Just fun.

Any additional comments?

I was generally familiar with Marsh and Cope and always thought there might be a good story there - the kind of thing that Michael Crichton was so good at finding, which is exactly what he did. I'm glad someone saw it through to completion.

Exceptional Surprise!

Would you listen to Dragon Teeth again? Why?

First of all, why "surprise"? I am usually wary of books published long after an author's death as they seem to be generally inferior to their other material, giving one the impression that it was either rejected by the author during his life as unsatisfactory, or patched together from discarded material by someone with rights to his estate. This was most assuredly NOT the case with Dragon Teeth. I cannot imagine how other reviewers could label this great novel below Crighton's standards as it was truly exceptional. Like his other novels, it was very informative and highly entertaining-----couldn't stop listening to it.
I doubt that I would listen to it again since I rarely listen to any fiction a second time.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The lead character, Johnson.

What about Scott Brick and Sherri Crichton ’s performance did you like?

Scott Brick is simply the best narrator I have ever heard and I have listened to hundreds (maybe thousands) of audio books.

Any additional comments?

My only additional comment is that despite the author's emphasis (in the epilogue) that the work was purely fiction, most of the events are verifiably accurate history. I am actually embarrassed to have labeled this book a "surprise," since Crighton was such a brilliant and entertaining author. I simply cannot imagine why this epic work was not published during his lifetime.

Interesting

I can't say whether it "feels like a Chrichton" as another reviewer stated, so my review is based solely on this book alone, not compared to anything else. What I can say is that I was immediately drawn into the story and it held my attention until the end. However, to be honest, a major reason I enjoyed it so much was because of the narrator. Most people either adore Scott Brick or loathe him, there is generally no in-between. I happen to absolutely love him. To me, his tone and pacing are always perfectly suited for whatever he reads and his ability to bring even the flattest stories to life is amazing. I've listened to books based solely on the fact that he was narrator regardless of whether they were in my wheelhouse. Dragon Teeth was not one of those as this happens to be right up my alley. Maybe I wouldn't have enjoyed it quite as much had it been read by someone else, but I would still definitely call it a worthwhile listen.

I'm not convinced Crichton actually wrote this

Book was OK / not great - I'm not even sure if Crichton even wrote this since it was published so long after he passed away (2008). I looked at his website and it doesn't actually say it was written by him - I'm guessing it was written by someone else but can't be sure. Regardless, an interesting story but not nearly the page-turner like his other books.
Sort of reminds me of his early pre-Andromeda Strain books that he published in the late 1960's.

Jurassic park goes west.

What made the experience of listening to Dragon Teeth the most enjoyable?

I loved the entire book. The plot of the book got me excited to listen.

What did you like best about this story?

As I stated above, the plot. I also liked the way the story was written in a narrative full of action.

What about Scott Brick and Sherri Crichton ’s performance did you like?

I loved the way Scott read the entire book. He really keeps you listening, and Sherri read he afterword with love.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Jurassic west.

Any additional comments?

I love all of Michael Crichton's novels. He wrote them in a way people would be interested in. I feel that the narrative that he tells in all of his novels is great, because you don't listen to just a scientific account. If you had the time, you would want to read, and listen to these novels all in one day.

Great story. Surprisingly easy to follow.

Very well read! Historical antidotes really added to the excitement. Listened to several parts two or three times just to get the full enjoyment of the story and reading.

Doesn't feel like Crichton

Any additional comments?

This book feels like it was written by a Cussler ghost writer. Although the description of this book says well researched, it has a superficial glossiness... I'm going to use two words - organic, and granular, and that is usually the vibe from a Crichton book --- just not feeling it here. Usually with his books, even his last pirate book, you feel like you are there. The use of a stock-plot bad guy also is not expected, yet here we are. TRW

Pretty good listen. Wrong reader for this book.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Different reader. Scott Brick should stick to romance novels.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dragon Teeth?

Not a memorable book.

What three words best describe Scott Brick and Sherri Crichton ’s voice?

Brick puts me to sleep. I wish I could compel him to get on with it. So slow and monotone. Every. Word. Is. So. Important. This is Crichton. Not poetry.

Did Dragon Teeth inspire you to do anything?

Avoid Scott Brick. But it's hard to do. The guy works a lot and reads so many books I want.

Any additional comments?

Jurassic Park was so interesting, novel, and creative. I stayed up all night in a Paris bathroom (the only working light available) to finish it. I couldn't put it down and I have been looking for another Crichton experience like that one. Dragon Teeth is not that.
