    Description

After seven national best sellers and eight seasons as one of the most successful shows on television, New York Times best-selling author Jeff Lindsay bids a thrilling farewell to his uniquely twisted and beloved serial killer, Dexter Morgan. Dexter Is Dead is the definitive conclusion of the character who has become a global icon.

Dexter Morgan has burned the candle at both ends for many years: blood spatter analyst...husband...father...serial killer. And now, for the first time, his world has truly collapsed. Dexter is arrested on charges of murder. He has lost everything - including his wife, his kids, and the loyalty of his sister. Now completely alone, Dexter faces a murder charge (for a crime, ironically, he did not actually commit). His only chance for freedom lies with his brother, Brian, who has a dark plan to prove Dexter's innocence. But the stakes are deadly, and the epic showdown that lies in Dexter's path may lead, once and for all, to his demise.

Jeff Lindsay's trademark devilish wit and cutting satire have never been sharper. Dexter Is Dead marks the end of a beloved series, but is also Dexter's most satisfying and suspenseful outing yet.

Thats how you end the series?

Very disappointed. That wasnt even close to the caliber of the previous dexter books. The big "twist" in the story was so stupidly obvious. And the ending... Really? Just like that? Were you trying to be the new version of the Sopranos??

A sorry end to a great series

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Dexter isn't for everyone, but this final book in the Dexter series isn't worth recommending to anyone--perhaps someone I don't like.

What was most disappointing about Jeff Lindsay’s story?

Dexter's Dead didn't stick to the premise that made the series enjoyable. I don't know which is worse, Lindsay abandoning all his characters to present a finale book with a plot one inch deep. Brian, Debs, Astor, and Dexter are unrecognizable. Not even Cody is consistent with his previous character.

How could the performance have been better?

The performance characterized Dexter as a prissy self-involved who is almost normal, which is a crime by itself.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The only redeeming quality of this book is that it clearly demonstrates that Jeff Lindsay no longer wants to write Dexter books.

    Any additional comments?

    Totally disappointing!!!

Can't believe I was fooled again.

Shame on me I guess. Lindsay got me with the last book removing anything likable about Dexter. Now he has finished the job. Well done Mr. Lindsay you managed to end a book worse than the Showtime Series.

    glad it's over

these books have just gone downhill. before, Dexter came off as a genius. now he just comes across as a big bumbling baffoon. and the alliteration is old. too much of it isn't a good thing. I liked the first Dexter books, but the golden goose got old and thank god it's over.

    Hilarious

I think this one is my favorite in this series! Fast moving and never stopped being amusing. If only all serial killers were filled such whimsy!
Glad I kept in wish list so that I would finally get it and listen!

    Unsatisfying

I loved the tv series and the series early books. Plus, Jeff Lindsay is a perfect Dexter (as the author, of course, he should know). The one before this was boring, but I wanted to give Lindsay another chance. It was certainly better but definitely not up to the standards of the first few. Yes, he says funny things, but they are mere chuckles. And the story is not that exciting or entertaining. (Beware of spoilers in some of the other reviews, by the way.)

For me, yes.I love hearing a great story!

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Dexter,because he's Dexter!

What about Jeff Lindsay’s performance did you like?

    Good Old Dexter...

Jeff Lindsay brings the Dexter series to an exciting conclusion in Book 8 of the series. It always seemed improbable to me that Dexter could continue finding "playmates" without any consequences. The irony of this story is that he is imprisoned for a crime he actually didn't commit.

This book does a good job illustrating not only Dexter's strengths, but also his blind spots and flat-out social miscalculations. He has finally pushed his sister Debra too far and she deserts him, which shows us how much he really does depend on his adopted family to keep him grounded and living (sometimes) within society's rules. When his adopted family abandons him he turns to his biological one with predictable results. Dexter's wit and sarcasm keep the book entertaining and we are often reminded that he is a highly skilled tactician and hunter of humans.

The conclusion is a little rough and I felt like the book stopped mid-story, which I suppose was the point. When I made the purchase I didn't realize this was the final book in the series which makes a big difference in how I view the ending.

Jeff Lindsay's narration is brilliant and spot-on with Dexter but falls a little short when it comes to the other characters, particularly women. At times his portrayal of Brian and Debra in particular was somewhat difficult to listen to. I would love to see what a professional actor could do with this series.

All in all, a worthy use of a credit! Thanks to Jeff Lindsay for creating this quirky and unique character.

    Parting is such sweet sorrow

Excellent wrap-up from Jeff Lindsay. I'm sorry to see Dex go, but the story worked very well. Although I knew it was going to happen, Lindsay brought me from kicking and screaming to calm resignation. I hope to learn what becomes of the two little passengers without Dex around to guide them. One day, maybe?

    FABULOUS

Jeff Lindsay has more wit than any other English writer alive, including those publishing in the comedy genre. I listen to his books solely in private as I frequently burst out in raucous cackling which is unseemly and rude in most public places. He and he alone is Dexter for me as his narration cannot be surpassed.

This current novel is deftly plotted, brilliantly funny and plainly - a great time.
