Description

"A brilliant examination of the shadows lurking in every relationship and what happens when you step into the darkness." - Mindy Mejia, author of Everything You Want Me to Be

When Shea Walker, a sunny, easygoing mom, is found dead in a bathtub with a stomach full of booze and pills, the shocking discovery shatters the complacency of her comfortable suburban community.

Kat Burrows, Shea's longtime friend and former neighbor, is hit hardest. How could a woman she thought she knew so well come to such a sordid end? What could lead happy, well-adjusted, responsible Shea to accidentally overdose on alcohol and narcotics? Or, worse, drive her to suicide?

Compelled to uncover the truth of Shea's final months, Kat delves beneath the orderly surface of her familiar world to discover a web of thwarted desire, shameful secrets, and shocking betrayal that suggests a scarier explanation for what happened to Shea. As her carefully constructed reality begins to crumble, Kat must question every reassuring assumption her life is built upon to solve the mystery...and summon the courage and resourcefulness to survive it.

I expected so much more...

From E C Diskin. I have listened to her other books (Broken Grace & The Green Line) and both were outstanding. This book was like listening to an episode of Hollywood Housewives, or what I think an episode would sound like. The characters were not likable, very catty, gossipy and were lacking in common sense.
I made it through about 5 hours but just could not listen anymore. Once I start a book I generally like to finish in hopes of a redeeming quality but I gave up.
The narrators did a good job.
I hope this author will return to her previous writing style.

Dark Emotional Story

This is the theme to this story.....Shea is found dead in a bathtub at the beginning of the story, the rest of the book we find out about the lies and fantasies that all her friends and husband share. Who is really telling the truth and can one friend figure it all out before it is too late. This story has so many twists and turns and will have you guessing right up until the end.

Coleen Marlo and Emily Sutton-Smith were outstanding with the delivery of the story

OMG! This is, like, all SO high school.

These are adult characters who display poor decision making, low impulse control and a weird, inability to relate cause and potential effect. Who ARE these twits who can't anticipate problems arising from telling others 'all they have a right to know'?

Spare me from these intrusive, bitchy girlfriends. You know the type - the ones who ask inappropriately personal questions, then instantly apologize, thus getting not only a reaction to the question but earning 'sensitivity' points as well. This friend then might go to all other mutual acquaintances, expressing 'concern' for their pal, who just seems to be 'keeping something in.' Pretty soon what you've got is just a big ol' gossip fest with everybody up to their armpits in one another's personal business. A Gladys Kravitz at every window.

There is much dialog that goes something like: 'Do you think I should tell Pam what Bob did with Mary at Jan's party? Or should we tell Mary's husband Ralph and let him tell Pam? Maybe we ought to let Jan know since it was her party, and then her husband Frank can decide whether to tell Ralph.' See the picture? Way too many characters present, at least in spirit, in every block of dialog. Enough to make one's head spin. Listening to this book I was silently screaming, 'Make a point! GET THERE, for crying out loud!'

The two narrators did a surprisingly good job giving each character an individual style of whining and bitchiness. But this is not a 'keeper' of an audiobook to be enjoyed again.

Great book, not so great narration

I LOVED the book! It absolutely kept me guessing & trying to figure out what had happened until the very end. It was incredibly hard to stop listening/reading. However, the narrator was rathe monotone & spoke very deliberately to the point where it could be annoying. There were many times she would pause between syllables. I found it to be distracting but the story was so good I continued to listen because I needed to know what was going to happen.

Loved it!

I highly recommend this listen. This was a great book--it kept things a mystery without feeling like it was desperate to catch the reader off guard at any cost like so many books these days. The characters are likeable and believable, and I didn't find myself rolling my eyes or saying "That would never happen." I found the resolution of the mystery and the ending very satisfying as well.
The readers were both just OK. For a while I wasn't even sure whether they were the same person or not because they both overenunciate things and have an odd, clipped 'gait' of talking. Since they both did this, I assume it was the fault of whoever directed the performance. It wasn't unpleasant to listen to, but it was odd and occasionally just a tad grating to hear the book read in an expressive robot voice. Though it WAS very amusing to hear one of them continue in the same tone while reading the copyright warning at the end as if still reading a novel.

Good story. Suspenseful up to the end. I struggled a little halfway through it , but glad I continued.

Great Story Engaging Read

Would you consider the audio edition of Depth of Lies to be better than the print version?

Only have listened

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

For the most part yes. There were a few different story lines and a couple that weren’t very interesting that you had to get through to get back to the good stuff.

Which scene was your favorite?

A few. Can’t really break it down to just one in any really good book.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The Ups and Downs of Suburbia

Any additional comments?

Why don’t audibles get recorded with a different voice or narrator for each character?? In this book I liked that they at least had a male and female and I think it is why I enjoyed it more than others I’ve listened to.

great story!

Really liked how the author integrated the past and present to tell a great "who did it " story.
