    Description

Emma is content. She's got a promising career in front of her, great friends, and a pretty amazing family. But her love life has been a little lacking lately. That's when fate steps in, and she crashes into a tall, dark, and handsome man - Teren Adams. He’s single, successful, an extraordinary gentleman, but he’s also secretive. And some of his secrets are more unusual than most people’s. For instance, he’s a "little bit" vampire. He has fangs, incredible hearing, unbelievable speed, and, on occasion, he enjoys drinking a steaming cup of blood. But he’s also very much alive. He has a heartbeat, loves steak as well as cappuccinos, and has no problems walking around during the day. Since Teren acts human the majority of the time, the pros far outweigh the cons in Emma’s book. But when it becomes apparent that Teren’s condition is much more serious than he first lets on, and that being in a relationship with him requires more sacrifices than most would be willing to make, will Emma stay? Is love enough to compensate for a life that will never be anywhere near normal? But then again...what's normal anyway?

    I'm Converted

Look, this is a terrific audio book IF you are into vamps. It's clever, creative, fun, funny, emotional, witty, dramatic, scary and downright interesting. It's got a new take on the vampire world (at least to me) and the performance by Piper Goodeve is nothing short of spectacular. Acting as the sole narrator, she captures all the characters (and there are some doozies) as well as giving validity, substance and believability to the two leads (Teren and Emma). I was not a fan of Ms Stephen's Thoughtless series and did not even attempt to read beyond that first book. So I approached this series with trepidation...but it's gotten good reviews and I LOVE Ms Goodeve's narrative/performance talent. So, I dove in and am glad of it. About to start Bloodlines (book 2). I will not go into the substance/story line of the book as I'd probably spoil it AND you can read that for yourself in any synopsis. What you get from me is how much I ENJOYED this audio book and why.

    I hated this book!

Emma is a yuppie princess who loves to tell us all about her kakis and button downs, her too large and trash filled shoulder bag, her awful boss at work, how she only wears basic makeup like mascara and lip gloss, and the fact that she likes her coffee a certain way -- ad nauseum. She is so self involved that there isn't a detail of her life that she leaves out of her story. And despite the fact that she isn't at all concerned with pausing the action for inane digressions that made me yell at the wall during the very few actions scenes, or the fact that she was constantly in a childish temper -- despite all of that -- I had to finish this stupid book!

One day while making her daily coffee run for a pick me up, Emma meets a 1/4 vampire, 3/4 human guy, and they fall for each other. Thing is, he's got very little time left before he meets true death, so he wants to make a baby with her ASAP. What's a girl to do? He is the love of her life (after only knowing him a couple of months), so they get busy right a way.

Teren is every bit the yuppie that Emma is. He's stubborn and willful and determined to live what's left of his human life where and how he wants, even if that means putting Emma and any other human in danger of death when the change comes upon him. Their both immature a$$holes, and I wanted to knock their heads together.

Without the vampire element, this book would have been the literary equivalent of watching paint dry.

Their families are pretty dull also, even though his are various degrees of vampire, and her's includes a sister whose been horribly scarred by surviving a fire at a young age. The whole thing reads like a pretty dull YA love story, even though it's advertised as being for adults. Any sex that happens gets short shrift in Emma's narrative and happens "off camera."

So why did I read it?

And why did I buy book two?

Ok, so even though I found Emma to be beyond annoying, (and the 1st person structure didn't help), nor did the spot on narration of Piper Goodeve, this stupid book held my interest til the end.

    I know, I don't get it either.

    Not for me.

I hate that I need to write this but, I could not get into this book. I really wanted to like it but I am 3/4 of the way and not sure I can finish it. I know what will happen and it's boring. I will not be going on with this series.

    Interesting...that's why I kept reading....

This book was very interesting. I like to see how an author views their vampire world. They are all different, and I love to see what each type of vamp can do in each series. So I was interested with this one because he is a half vamp. That was a new one to me.
It was sort of boring in the beginning, but I kept on going because I love this author from her series Thoughtless. The author was actually the reason why I even gave this book a shot.
In the end, I would say again that it was interesting. It could have been a little "dirtier" for my taste, but I'll read the next book to see what happens.

Overall: Use a credit if you've got one :)

I just can't finish this book

The reader started out slightly annoying, but then it turned out that the female character was also slightly annoying, so that ended up being a match. Not that I care for annoying readers or characters. The supposed romantic relationship was a cross between boring and aggravating - no spark or heat at all that I could feel. Just a flat book. I was surprised that the storyline could be stripped of any excitement or interest - even the sex was boring. When Chapter 2 started, I thought I had been listening for a really long time. I didn't like the interaction between the couple in any way. The story wasn't interesting, sexy, funny, romantic, fun, exciting, or scary - it wasn't anything. I didn't want to spend any more time with characters that I did not like. It might work for some, but did not work for me.

    Stupid, self-absorbed, half-porn, pseudo-vampire

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Getting a better written story? Where people actually have personality? This book feels like a slightly more porn-y version of Twilight, no story, no personalities, no plot, no nothing

Would you ever listen to anything by S. C. Stephens again?

    NO

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Piper Goodeve?

No one, as this story shouldn't have been published as a book, let alone an audiobook. Piper isn't at fault, with this material she couldn't have done any better.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

NO. A whiney, brainless, self-absorbed girl falls in love with a little-bit-vampire, who is brooding and sinister and about to die and needs to make a baby before. Is S.C. Stephens a pseudonym for Stepheny Meyer? This book is about equally as lifeless as Twilight ...

    Any additional comments?

I want my credit back for this garbage. And I'd like to question the sanity of the Audible staff who put this out there as a fun, light summer listen, paranormal romance ... There's no romance in it, it's just badly written porn. It's not fun, it's not light, it's a desperate story about a 19 year old agreeing to have a baby with a vampire just to continue his "line" - whom he seems to loathe anyway ... *argh* Why aren't there any good books anymore?

    Superficial, immature characters, poor story

I am not opposed to the Doritos of literature - delicious stories with questionable nutritional value, but truly this book would be the rice cakes of literature: dull, stale and boring. The main character was vapid. The supportive characters were superficial, immature (especially for the assumed age of vampires), and the story was excrutiatingly predictable. I would know the outcome of a particular line of questioning chapters in advance of the protagonist, which made me almost angry at times. There wasn't a single likeable character in the book. Very disappointing. I made it 6 hours until I gave up.

The narrator wasn't bad - per say, just robotic with minimal inflection.

    No,just no.

Would you try another book from S. C. Stephens and/or Piper Goodeve?

Probably not. I can't decide if it's the book or the narrator.

What could S. C. Stephens have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    Characters seem immature

How could the performance have been better?

Difficult to distinguish male voice from female

    Any additional comments?

Hope to get my credit back to use on something better.

Best Romantic Vampire Love Story; Twilight for Adults.

Conversion, I found to be the best romantic Vampire love story, Twilight for adults. The story of a man who is a quarter Vampire, but is about to face a change in his human life when he bumps into Emma and her coffee. Emma, who complained of a boring stale life will be swept up into a family of Vampires who raise cattle.

    Slow, fizzles out, little intrigue

    Any additional comments?

I love the way the book started out but I admit; I could not finish it. The book could have been condensed by at least a third without loosing anything from the story and I felt the character spent to much time fretting and creating problems that weren't there. Some good concepts but to much padding!
