Church culture has increasingly equated influence with growth such as through bigger stages, brighter lights, and smoother programming. In the process, many churches have unconsciously traded authenticity for replication, formation for production, and human dignity for optics and numerical success. These shifts can be subtle, but over time, such decisions quietly compose the culture of a church. Are we aware of what we are composing week to week?
Becky Ykema has served across a wide spectrum of ministry contexts, from large megachurches to small warehouse congregations. Having experienced firsthand the pressures of performance-driven ministry, she recognizes the warning signs of churches drifting toward image management rather than inner formation. In Composing Church: Considerations for the Modern Creative Leader, Ykema invites church and ministry leaders into a reflective process of intentionally shaping healthy church cultures.
Drawing from real-life scenarios, she connects everyday decisions to deeper systemic outcomes, encouraging change that is rooted in kindness, transparency, and spiritual health. Guided by a deep love for the Church, this book encourages leaders to center God’s voice as they compose church.
