I’m Val Thorvald, and I’m an assassin. When magical bad guys hurt people, I take care of them. Permanently. This doesn’t make me popular with the rest of the magical community — as you can tell from the numerous break-ins and assassination attempts I’ve endured over the years. But thanks to my half-elven blood, a powerful sword named Chopper, and a telepathic tiger with an attitude, I’ve always been able to handle my problems with aplomb. Maybe some cursing and swearing, too, but definitely aplomb.

Histoire
Every year, each village is required to send a young woman to the Empire's capital - her fate to be burned alive for the entertainment of the masses. For the last five years, one small village's tithe has been the same woman. Gilene's sacrifice protects all the other young women of her village, and her secret to staying alive lies with the magic only she possesses. But this year is different. Azarion, the Empire's most famous gladiator, has somehow seen through her illusion - and is set on blackmailing Gilene into using her abilities to help him escape his life of slavery.
Description
Set in the same world as Faith Hunter's New York Times best-selling Jane Yellowrock novels, the fourth Soulwood novel stars Nell Ingram, who channels her power from the Earth.
Nell can draw magic from the land around her, and lately she's been using it to help the Psy-Law Enforcement Division, which solves paranormal crimes. Joining the team at PsyLED has allowed her to learn more about her powers and the world she always shunned - and to find true friends.
Head agent Rick LaFleur shifts into a panther when the moon calls him, but this time, something has gone wrong. Rick calls Nell from a riverbank - he's naked, with no memory of how he came to be there, and there's a dead black cat, sacrificed in a witch circle and killed by black magic, lying next to him.
Then more animals turn up dead, and team rushes to investigate. A blood-witch is out to kill. But when it seems as if their leader is involved in the crime, the bonds that hold the team together could shatter at any moment.

Faith Hunter is the true master of the long game!
Circle of the Moon is the fourth book in the Soulwood Series and is set in the same world as the Jane Yellowrock books. This story comes after Dark Queen, so beware of spoilers. We pick up not long after the end of Flame in the Dark when Nell and Occam, as agents of PsyLED, are called to a riverbank where lead agent Rick LaFleur has been drawn to a witch circle. What follows is a wild ride where multiple cases keep the team hopping, while mystery swirls around Rick and his unknown past.
I love the overlap of characters and happenings in New Orleans. Faith Hunter takes details from early in the Jane Yellowrock series and seamlessly weaves them into this present day story. I adore the growing relationship between Nell and Occam, as well as the character growth of Nell as she takes over the care of her sister Mud. I had some doubts at the end of Flame in the Dark, and really wondered where this series was going, but Faith Hunter pulls off a truly amazing read with action, adventure, mystery, and a touch of romance. It has a little something for everyone. Khristine Hvam does an amazing job with all of the Jane Yellowrock/Soulwood Series characters, male, female, privileged vampire, to God's Cloud cult member, she never fails to bring them to life!

Good, But not my Favorite
This book was good, but not my favorite. Liked it a bit better the second time I listened to it.
I like Occam/Nell story line, but think it is really moving TOO slowly.
Liked that T. Laine had more story line this book. She is a wonderful character, as well as JoJo and Tandy.
Also liked the addition of Margo, a well needed smart, less emotional lady.
Like Yummy and Nell becoming friends.
I like Mindy, but the Larry/Mindy story line was tedious. Seems like the "momma's" keep going backwards in progression in lieu of for progressing forward as the started to in book 1.
Where did Soul disappear to? No real mention of that. Where did Jane's brother come from? Little explanation on both of these subjects.
Too much Rick and his tats for me. and Lori Ann, wtf? lets keep trusting her even though she is TOTALLY not trustworthy. Really smart people acting stupidly is too boring of a story line for my liking.
My favorite books are Flame in the Dark and Blood of the Earth. Then Curse on the Land. This book my least favorite of all. Just my humble opinion.

A Different Perspective (And Plenty of Twists)
Nell has really started to grow on me - no pun intended. There's conflict at work and at home that pulls her in different directions, but she's well-grounded (that one might have been intentional) enough to use her connection to Soulwood to get her through the worst of it. Book 3 was a nail-biter. Book 4 made me sigh with relief. This sassy heroine is vulnerable and strong at once, and that's all part of what makes her such a wonderful character.
I'm a huge fan of both the Soulwood and Jane Yellowrock series. That being said, with this fourth Soulwood installment, you really get an interesting take on characters from the JY books, since the story arc in this book touches back on the events in JY book 12 (Dark Queen). If you''re up to date with both series, this is gravy. It's not necessary, however, to have read the Yellowrock books to enjoy the Soulwood novels. They'e incredible books with a storylines and a main character distinct and separate in every way that matters. Different characters come with their own histories and personalities, and, as such, their perspectives on characters and plot points they share makes for an interesting reading experience. It's like artists in a room sketching the same still life and coming up with different pictures. I appreciate that. It adds to my enjoyment and the deftness with which the author writes well-rounded characters.
What I love about this series is that Nell grows and evolves just as her story does. She's flawed, she has weaknesses, she discovers strengths she learns to use to her advantage, and she continues to forge a new future for herself as she finds her place. It's really a story about making your way in a world that sometimes pushes back.
I've fallen in love with a few of the main players, and this novel gave them a bit more exposure, which I was delighted to discover. It was hard to put this book down once I started listening.
Keep 'em coming, Ms. Hunter. I love the world she's built with her Soulwood series, and I can't wait to see where she takes it next!

Not bad
I agree there wasn't a lot of character development but I'm okay with that. I found it entertaining and loved listening to it. I would encourage Ms Hunter to find other descriptions when Nell reaches for Soulwood. I got exasperated....I look forward to #5 nonetheless.

Slow paced but lots of questioned answered
Circle of the Moon starts a few months after The Dark Queen in the Jane Yellowrock series. Reading the Jane's Dark Queen novel isn't necessary to understand what's happening but be aware that it is referenced a lot.
This story is 60% about Rick's background and it finally sheds light on what his enchanted tattoos were designed to do.
This is a slow read. It's not a bad book. The writing style seems consistent with the previous books. There are things happening but there is definitely some drag here and there.
Nell also becomes even more powerful by the end of the story. At the rate she is moving she will become "all-powerful" and that's not what I'm hoping for with her. When characters have too much power or get to the point where no one can compare them the suspense of storytelling is mute. You'll always know that they'll do their "special power" and win in the end. The not knowing is what makes the page worth turning. I hope Hunter finds a way to level things out with Nell's strengths.
I find this series is an opposite/balancing work of literature to the Jane Yellowrock series. Especially since I just read The Dark Queen a couple weeks ago. Where Jane is action-oriented and a kick-a$$ hero, Nell tends to be more of a sneaky-pete/polite-planner with a few suppressed blood thirsty tendencies. Jane is very open about her love of the fight, where Nell tries to fight the pull towards violence.
I'm torn about the amount of details in this story. Nell's books seem to be filled with elaborate details on her interpersonal battles between what she was used to with the church and what is acceptable in the general public. Though most of it is relatable. There are times that her need to be independent in EVERY SINGLE THING comes across as irrational. Something as simple as someone buying her lunch will be portrayed from her as the Male purposely taken her decision away from her. Even I wanted to tell her to chill out a bit and eat the damn burger.
One other thing that bothers me about this series is the existence of the grendalowes. (I listened to audio version so not sure how she speaks that) I understand the purpose that Hunter has given them, but I don't see why it's necessary. Every single were-animal is at risk to spread the virus, so in theory every single were-animal would need one. Also, if a were-animal can never spread the taint then how would there ever be more weres? In theory, eventually were-animals would become existent if they all followed the rules. Then what would be the grendies purpose? Every species has a desire to procreate and expand, so it's a bit like fighting nature. Yes, I'm thinking deep into this but I'm weird so bare with me. My whole rant is to build up to the point that I don't care for these creatures in the story and "IF" one of my favorite characters were to die at their hands I'd be extremely ticked off... EXTREMELY! That isn't a spoiler, just an opinion.
This story has the same feel as its predecessors. At times it felt a bit slow paced and again the internal conflicts were turned up a notch. If you really enjoyed the first few books then this one isn't far off from their levels. There isn't anything that would turn you off with this one. However, if you were on the fence about this series, then this might be the one that will make you're decision on it final.
Kristine Hvam does an excellent job with her narration as always.
3 Stars 🌟🌟🌟- Good Book. I like the overall concept and it was delivered well. Most common ranking for a book I enjoyed and look forward to the next.

Wow
All the incidents that seems unrelated at the beginning becomes so well interwoven that I was sucked into the book until the very end. I guess the best part about this book is that even though it’s actionfilled it never forgets to show us how Mel is moving on with her life. She is so much more comfortable with her Powers and her role as an agent.
I was very satisfied in knowing Rick’s Mysterious tattoos and illness is finally resolved in this amazing story. I had hated him for a long time for how he treated Jane but also have been feeling bad about his heaps of misfortune and unhappiness for a while now.
