Charcoal the Elf, Book Two: Down Under picks up where Book One: Up Top leaves off. Charcoal, shunned and bullied by his fellow elves Up Top because he's different (his bizarre hair), is a classic misfit. Together with Trixie, his cousin and only friend, they travel the globe Down Below to the domain of human beings, on a fact-finding mission commissioned by no one other than the Big Elf himself, to learn why humans have lost the spirit of Yule, and how they might help restore peace on earth goodwill to all humankind, ultimately preventing the destruction of the very planet they all live on.
Unprepared for the difficulties and contradictions of the complex human reality, while learning about the world Down Below they also learn about themselves. But they soon discover that a malevolent force is watching them closely, following their every move, determined to prevent the cousins from succeeding in their mission, even if it means annihilating them in the process.
