We hear tales and testimonials from successful proofreaders who quit their (horrible) day jobs and have made the transition to happiness and freedom through proofreading! There is an entire YouTube channel devoted to such irresistible testimonials—stories of hapless folks who ventured into proofreading and are now skipping the daily grind and living the dream! Incredibly intoxicating! Especially when you’re watching on your lunch break and contemplating any possible solution to achieve financial freedom other than your current job.
We hear captivating stories from the online gurus who teach proofreading, and we are hooked because we want to believe. Copywriters have crafted mountains of riveting evidence to support the proofreading gig mentality. The dream sounds so tangible!
The truth is that proofreading is a great side gig and can be a lucrative main hustle for some, but what defines financial success or freedom is not the same for everyone. The pathway to this success is not easy or fast, and sometimes the result is not as lucrative as we are led to believe. This book dives into the true costs of starting out as a proofreader, what it takes, and what you need to know before you get started.
