Hidden in the Smoky Mountains, a family homestead burns to the ground, sparking a plucky young woman to come undone. It also ignites a survival story - her quest for self-actualization. As the heroine describes her 14-year search for identity to an Oklahoma Cherokee audience, it was her contact with Native culture that led her to appreciate common human values, to understand the power of heritage, and to achieve self-awareness. Arising from fire and dancing like curlicues of smoke, her story, full of adventure, humor, quirky personalities, and a bit of intrigue, casts a spotlight on the universal struggle for both personal and cultural identity in an ever-changing American society.
Considerable research and generous assistance from many Cherokees helped produce the book. Buried Smoke is lush with their unique story that illustrates the importance of cultural identity to everyone. Recommended for those who love a good story well told and fires of all kinds.
The narrator of this well-reviewed book is Lisa LaRue, a Cherokee tribal member.
