Description
The unforgettable New York Times best-selling family saga from Markus Zusak, the storyteller who gave us the extraordinary best seller The Book Thief, lauded by the New York Times as "the kind of book that can be life-changing."
Named one of the best books of the year by Entertainment Weekly and The Wall Street Journal.
"One of those monumental books that can draw you across space and time into another family’s experience in the most profound way." (The Washington Post)
"Mystical and loaded with heart, it's another gorgeous tearjerker from a rising master of them." (Entertainment Weekly)
"Devastating, demanding and deeply moving." (Wall Street Journal)
The breathtaking story of five brothers who bring each other up in a world run by their own rules. As the Dunbar boys love and fight and learn to reckon with the adult world, they discover the moving secret behind their father’s disappearance.
At the center of the Dunbar family is Clay, a boy who will build a bridge - for his family, for his past, for greatness, for his sins, for a miracle.
The question is, how far is Clay willing to go? And how much can he overcome?
Written in powerfully inventive language and bursting with heart, Bridge of Clay is signature Zusak.
Commentaires
"In a complex narrative that leaps through time and place and across oceans, Zusak paints a vivid portrait of the brothers trying to regain their balance by keeping their family’s story alive." (Time)
“A captivating book with a mighty, fearless heart, Bridge of Clay is filled with characters to believe in and care about...achingly moving, delightfully funny, and thoroughly uplifting.” (M. L. Stedman, best-selling author of The Light Between Oceans)
“If The Book Thief was a novel that allowed Death to steal the show...[its] brilliantly illuminated follow-up is affirmatively full of life.” (The Guardian)

Give it time.
I wasn't sure at the beginning, but the more I listened the more I loved it. it is the story of a real family, told in a unique fascinating way.

Don't Quit too Soon
I bought this book because of various reviews, and because the author wrote "The Book Thief." But, when I started listening, I almost gave up. The first few chapters left me scratching my head ... WHAT IS HE TALKING ABOUT? But one review said "hang in there," and so I did. You should too. This is an extremely powerful book, ferociously emotional, and well worth reading!

Masterfully written and performed
If you begin this book and are as perplexed as I was, don’t give up on it. You will soon come to love each of the characters, as well as the beautiful imagery. This is the best book I have read in many years. It will touch your heart and change you forever. It is masterfully written and performed.

Hard to follow
This book isn't the book to listen to unless you have long periods of uninterrupted listening time and even then you will find it very hard to follow. If you are set on it, read it, so you can go back and figure out what it is taking about. It jumps from present to past, from brother to brother and then other times you just plain don't know who he is talking about. It is very slow at first and also drags in other parts as well. I'm sorry I devoted so much time to it. It required too much for me to keep track of what they were talking about. Just wasn't for me.

Overwhelming sadness
Zusak’s lyrical writing evokes strong emotions. This book made me smile now and then, but the emotion for me throughout the book was overwhelming sadness. Some reviewers have said they thought Zusak narrated the book in a monotone. I think he was giving a poetry reading to the rhythm of the metronome that features in the story. I didn’t have any trouble following the jumps in the story from past to present and character to character, but there could have been a bit less of that in some places without losing the impact.

Brilliant!
My Grandson, a young man with wisdom beyond his years, told me I had to read this book. I love listening so the Audible version became my first encounter. Moving, touching and meaningful are a few words I would ascribe to this work. Truth be told I can not put into words how deeply I have been touched by the genius of Mr. Zusak. From my Grandson to me, three generations attest to the endurance of love of family “Bridge of Clay” spans that gap and creates an everlasting bond between generations.

Not for me
I don't get it. It's probably me. But the droning on by the author as narrator baffles me. I can't help but think it might be a great book if someone else read it. Someone with a little oomph, emotion, enthusiasm, spirit, interest in relaying the message, whatever! I've been listening for a while now and have no idea where this book is going. There have been some beautiful lines and interesting words spoken by the characters, but no imagery, other than a donkey in the living room and a "smiling" piano. I am returning the book.

Beautiful book, beautiful narration
So beautiful! I was a little concerned at first about Markus Zusak reading it. This book was so much better because of it. Loved the book, loved the narrator! I understand some of the criticism about being hard to follow, but it is well worth it. I started the Book Thief 4 times before I could wrap my head around it. I didn't have any trouble with this one and actually enjoyed how it was woven together.

Man, I tried...
... but I just couldn't ever work up a 'give a damn' about the meandering story or any of its morose characters.
