On the edge of civilization, the village of Blackstone is dying, ignorant that a dormant evil has awoken in the mountains. Elayna, her father and the formidable Mistress Murgathwin strive to sustain Blackstone despite the oppressive demands of the Durian Monastery.
Cast out of the Monastery, Kerne, a rejected half-breed senses a creature hunting the people of Blackstone. Against his better judgement, he follows its trail into the village.
