From the author of 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos comes a provocative hypothesis that explores the connection between what modern neuropsychology tells us about the brain and what rituals, myths, and religious stories have long narrated. A cutting-edge work that brings together neuropsychology, cognitive science, and Freudian and Jungian approaches to mythology and narrative, Maps of Meaning presents a rich theory that makes the wisdom and meaning of myth accessible to the critical modern mind.

A vast canvas of camps, prisons, transit centres and secret police, of informers and spies and interrogators but also of everyday heroism, The Gulag Archipelago is Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's grand masterwork. Based on the testimony of some 200 survivors, and on the recollection of Solzhenitsyn's own 11 years in labour camps and exile, it chronicles the story of those at the heart of the Soviet Union who opposed Stalin, and for whom the key to survival lay not in hope but in despair.

After experiencing the life-changing results herself, she began to share what she'd learned with others - and soon The Holistic Psychologist was born.

This collection of 11 wide-ranging lectures which appeared originally in 1933, was based on lectures previously given when Jung was in the process of absorbing a considerable period of study of Eastern religions, Gnosticism and other religious sources. It was a time, according to the translator Cary F. Baynes, ‘when the Western world stands on the verge of a spiritual rebirth...after a long period of outward expansion, we are beginning to look inside ourselves once more.’

In Drug Use for Grown-Ups, he draws on decades of research and his own personal experience to argue definitively that the criminalization and demonization of drug use - not drugs themselves - have been a tremendous scourge on America, not least in reinforcing this country's enduring structural racism. Dr. Hart did not always have this view. He came of age in one of Miami's most troubled neighborhoods at a time when many ills were being laid at the door of crack cocaine. His initial work as a researcher was aimed at proving that drug use caused bad outcomes.

Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money.

Why do we do the things we do? More than a decade in the making, this game-changing book is Robert Sapolsky's genre-shattering attempt to answer that question as fully as perhaps only he could, looking at it from every angle. Sapolsky's storytelling concept is delightful, but it also has a powerful intrinsic logic: He starts by looking at the factors that bear on a person's reaction in the precise moment a behavior occurs and then hops back in time from there in stages, ultimately ending up at the deep history of our species and its evolutionary legacy.

If you follow the headlines, the world in the 21st century appears to be sinking into chaos, hatred and irrationality. Yet, as Steven Pinker shows, if you follow the trendlines, you discover that our lives have become longer, healthier, safer and more prosperous - not just in the West but worldwide. Such progress is no accident: it's the gift of a coherent value system that many of us embrace without even realising it. These are the values of the Enlightenment: of reason, science, humanism and progress.

Recently many people have assumed that we are blank slates shaped by our environment. But this denies the heart of our being: human nature. Violence is not just a product of society; male and female minds are different; the genes we give our children shape them more than our parenting practices. To acknowledge our innate abilities, Pinker shows, is not to condone inequality but to understand the very foundations of humanity.

Description
Brought to you by Penguin.
The highly anticipated sequel to 12 Rules for Life, which has sold over five million copies around the world.
In 12 Rules for Life, acclaimed public thinker and clinical psychologist Jordan B. Peterson offered an antidote to the chaos in our lives: eternal truths applied to modern anxieties. His insights have helped millions of people and resonated powerfully around the world.
Now in this long-awaited sequel, Peterson goes further, showing that part of life's meaning comes from reaching out into the domain beyond what we know and adapting to an ever-transforming world. While an excess of chaos threatens us with uncertainty, an excess of order leads to a lack of curiosity and creative vitality. Beyond Order therefore calls on us to balance the two fundamental principles of reality - order and chaos - and reveals the profound meaning that can be found on the path that divides them.
In times of instability and suffering, Peterson reminds us that there are sources of strength on which we can all draw: insights borrowed from psychology, philosophy and humanity's greatest myths and stories. Drawing on the hard-won truths of ancient wisdom, as well as deeply personal lessons from his own life and clinical practice, Peterson offers 12 new principles to guide listeners towards a more courageous, truthful and meaningful life.

Somewhat underwhelming - yet glad to have him back
After being both impressed and having my life very positively affected by Peterson's first work (12 rules for life), I felt a bit underwhelmed by this new extension. The book felt less structured and less dense/fleshed out than the first one. Furthermore, it brought little in addition to what one can gleen from listening to the author's lectures and public interventions.
This is a good extension for readers who wish to clarify some points seen in the first book, but aren't familiar with the author's lectures or public interventions. I would advise readers already familiar with Peterson's interventions to pass on this one, and save their time, money, and energy.
However, I am glad to see the author is feeling somewhat better and has endured the tragedies he faced. The public conversation is better with him participating. I wish him the best, and wish to express my gratitude to him for his work and the impact it had on me.

One of the rare times a sequel does not disappoint
I was worried that I would not like the 2nd installment given the precedent set by JP.
I can't say it's better, however, I can't say it's worse. It's just great in its own way like the other two books.

better than 12 rules for life
if the previous book was called 12 rules, this should be called 12 principles. It has more nuance, it says mainly that you have to apply the spirit of the law, not the letter. And only those who integrated the spirit of the law can broke the letter

Makes me move forward
JBP is imho a voice of the good. Listening to his work (s) propels me to not throwing it all away sometimes.
I may not have been tested by fate in a too harsh manner by now, but I hope I will be prepared and worthy when the day arrives.
Also, looking in youtube comments where people share storys how they got their lives together are a real thing.
I don't see how anything he advocates would make the world worse off, so he also acts as a filter in exposing toxic people, who hate him for made up stuff.
I also thought, it would be Impossible for me to come to peace with the modern big religions, but viewed in these archetypes, I'm much more prone to embracing rather than fighting it.
Whoever you are, get his works and hopefully do better in your life.

Präzise. Unterhaltsam.
