Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. Her quest for knowledge transformed her.

For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Description
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Becoming by Michelle Obama.
Winner of the Grammy's Best Spoken Word Album 2020.
Winner of the 2020 Audie Award for Autobiography/Memoir.
An intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former First Lady of the United States.
In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America - the first African American to serve in that role - she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the United States and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.
In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites listeners into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations - and whose story inspires us to do the same.
Commentaires
"A polished pearl of a memoir." (New York Times)
"A rich, entertaining and candid memoir. And overall Obama's a fun person to sit alongside as she tells you the story of her life...it is as beautifully written as any piece of fiction." (i)
"I found myself lifting my jaw from my chest at the end of every other chapter...this was not the Obama I thought I knew. She was more." (Independent)

Glad I persevered
I was not taken by the first few chapters of this book but decided to persevere given all the very positive reviews. I'm glad I did. For me the story really turned around from when she meets Barack. Her relationship with him and the concessions she makes whilst maintaining her girl power and indépendance were enlightening. Sometimes moving, I didn't want to switch it off. Her voice is gentle and reassuring (almost dull if you're not in the mood!!) - certainly not the hyper enthusiastic American style we're now used to.
Over all this book definitely reinforces the awesome image of this amazing couple and their suitability for that big White House and all that goes with it. I wish we could have him back! Suitably scathing of the new prez too! Read it! Don't let yourself get bored with the first part... although it is nice to know Michelle's background, it gets better later on.

Loved the book. It 's inspirational, life changing
I loved that the book was narrated by Michelle her self. It gave the book so much humanity and warmth although I think she tried to be as impartial as possible, her energy came through, witch I really appreciated. The narrative is really interesting and kept me hooked on listening to it.
I've been inspired by Michelle's story, I'm a woman and I'll definitely make some changes in my life for the better. I'm thankful that Michelle shared her story and that she continues to inspire women and girls all over the world to empower them sefs. Great book.

The autobiography of an inspiring woman !
I like reading autobiographies and I have been wanting to read Michelle Obama’s for some time now. I haven’t been disappointed. Her book is really well written and interesting. What I found particularly remarkable is her honesty. She shares difficulties, encountered in her couple, work, motherhood etc., that many of us can reliable on. She is such an inspiring woman with true values and after reading her book I respect her even more. Last but not least, there is nothing better than the author itself reading her book. Michelle Obama tell her story perfectly.

I am recommending this book to my friends, family and young women in my life. As a Black, female South African who grew up working class, there were so many things I could relate to in Michelle’s story. This helped me process my own thoughts and feelings about my personal journey.

The woman that is Michelle Obama
What is so inspiring about her story is that it starts of so similar almost like we were living the same life as children. Her journey was unique but still so are all our journeys, we just need to be reminded to always be authentic.
The Obama’s grace and struggles it have paved the way for many others. This book give a good insight of the profess and emotions that went on during that journey to and and while in the White House
This book has also thought me about what kind of parent I would like to be for my children. An insight of great parenting not just by the Obamas but also by the Robinsons.
Read this book.

Not for europeans
Though I had an immense respect for Michelle Obama as a rolemodel, being a european women reading this makes you realise she is stuck in a world of racism (including her own, the first thing she writes about anyone is of which colour they are). It is scary to realise someone with such capabilities and power is or needs to be consumed by boxing the world this way, I would have expected she would be above all this. It is nice to read how she deals with work life balance issues, but unfortunately it comes across as if Barack is a self absorbed man, which is probably to be expected if you even want to be president. So unfortunately I liked them much more before this book, wish I didn’t read it. Now I even view Baracks speeches, which I mostly adore differently. In the correspondent’s dinner of his last term for example, he ridiculizes Michelle’s vegetable garden which was a symbol of a health initiative. When you read the book you feel it is one of the few things she could enjoy during that time. That he then chose to mock that to score a joke is in my view inappropriate and disrespectful, possibly even seksist in a way. Michelle must have an insanely thick skin, or already became insensitive to it all. That is what makes the book (listening to her own voice) a sad read in the end, she writes about a journey to become something but it feels like she is lost, even a bit bitter whilst she herself is part of the living american dream.

Becoming .... More like Michelle Obama!
I was really skeptical, thinking this book might be overhyped. But wow, my mind was changed in the first few moments. Michelle Obama is an incredible woman: honest, vulnerable, poetic and powerful. She isn’t shy to talk about the painful sides of being married to a super-busy go-getter, or being a working mother or the first black First Lady - while still conveying a sure (and beautiful) sense of “it is worth it all”.
After reading her path of Becoming, I wish to become a little more like Michelle Obama: kind, collected, community-oriented.
